Trying to Use Flip Camera as a Webcam

Hi Gang

Ok, just bought a Flip HD (mino) camera. I want to record directly into Camtasia by using the Flip as a webcam. Now, most places say you can't do it but I found a guy who said you can using this software:

WebCamDV - DV Camcorder to WebCam Software Converter

...but despite downloading the trial, and using latest version of Camtasia, when I plug the Flip in, it still just goes to the "battery charging" display and in camtasia, just shows a logo for the Webcamdv software but won't actually allow me to see with the flip cam and record.

Suuuuuuurely, there must be a way?? ANy ideas? Otherwise, I can only record one hour before the flip is full, and have to recharge the batteries which takes 3 hours!!! AGH ...Please help troops.

Thanks,
Phil

I do not think you can use the flip in that way. I have the ultra and I know I can not do that with it.

Great product. I love my Flip. But I don't think it will do what you want.

Why can't you just make the recording using your Flip, then import it into Camtasia? I don't quite see the difference between importing it live, then having Camtasia record it, or just record and import?

There is no way to do that with the Flip-Cam - the software you mentioned is for DVCamcorder - a FlipCam is not a DV Camcorder.

That's what I thought, but look at the 3rd post in this thread:

Amazon.com: Customer Discussions: Can this camera be used as a webcam?

it seems a guy has got it working, but I can't.

Kurt, to answer your question, I've booked a studio to go in and record about 4 hours worth of footage, but with the flip hd mino, the battery is sealed, and can't use other batteries (it seems), so when it runs out of power after an hour or so, it then says it takes 3 hours(!) to recharge again.

It's still not working for you??? Need direction?...

Thanks Phil...That makes sense. I thought you must have a reason, I just couldn't think of it.

That is a limit of the Flip, not to mention it only holds an hour of video.

Oh man, I thought that might be the case...so, great for 10 minute blog post videos, and pointless for anything else. I'm gonna cry now :'-O

I would be interested to hear what people are using now that the Flip is dead. Iphones pretty much killed them but I don't think the iphone is good enough for high quality professional videos. It's OK for a blogger but for a bigger company, I think you still need a dedicated video recorder. What do people use now?

I'm going to use the software that you recommend as I have the same problem as you. I hope to solve it because I'm going crazy!

    Thank you
