Social Bookmarking Clarification

I was searching through the Forum for an answer to this question. Perhpas I missed it.

My question is: Which is more effective social bookmarking tactic, 10 highly page ranked bookmarking sites or submitting to every book marking site you can think of. Wouldn't that be spamming?

It depends. If you have lots of competition you'll need to build hundreds of links.
I have some pages I've been bookmarking for more than a year.

How would it be spam? Just because you intend to create a lot of bookmarks?

That's not spam, that's building your backlink portfolio.

People worry too much.

In some perspective, that is spamming...

But for individual site, you are just bookmarking your site. However, if you bookmarked too much of your own site, they might cancel your account. Just one link is ok!

I bookmark a mix of different sites and pages, not only my own. My goal is a natural bookmarking pattern more than a profile that screams self promotion.

Caroline Middlebrook recommended 20 bookmarking sites in a blog post back in 2007. I believe this list to still be relevant. Do a Google search for "caroline middlebrook"+bookmarking.

You definitely want to hit up the highly page ranked bookmarking sites but don't forget about the little guys either. Any place you can backlink or build potential traffic is a good place.

You can set up a dozen different accounts for each service with SocialMarker.com and for each new page or article, etc. you post, just log into a few of the accounts and post on maybe 10 or 20 of the 40 or so social bookmarking sites. You can use roboform to save the passwords.

It gets a nice jumpstart to your pages.

You have also got to think of the time factor. I submit to about 20 and get great results here is a list of them for you to use:

some sites can be harder to use than others i.e. reddit will let you only do one every eight minutes and if you are doing a full weeks worth of blog posts this can be rather annoying. Just like many wont allow articles to be bookmarked yet others will its all about finding a balance that suits you and your services and gets you results.

Thanks for posting that Emmanuel. I forgot to mention that.

Over the course of a few days or weeks, you can post into the different social bookmarking accounts you have set up as an initial jumpstart and after that post every now and again in different accounts so everything looks natural.
