Making money out of personal interest blogs?

Hello all,
I am new here and new to any concept of making money online. I have some questions about internet marketing and would like to ask them here is that is ok.
I am really unsure how it all works, I have some areas of specialist knowledge in for example art, film, esoteric studies and dermatology which I could blog and make videos about (perhaps also selling ebooks & tutorials I have some ideas) but is it really possible to make money from just writing about stuff that interests you? I quite like the idea of a blog or blogs which acts as a place to consolidate my study in these areas and which will perhaps open up new avenues of study, and if that information helps others great. Honestly I don't really want to put my "face" online (I don't even have a facebook) so while I'm open to speaking in video's I don't want to show my face or give my real name.
Also I while I would be willing to spend time writing my blogs etc I don't want to spend hours every day online, commenting, using social media and so on. This is because I already spend a lot of time on my practice as an artist I have an MFA and hopefully one day I will make a decent income as an artist but like most artists at the start it can be tough going, however I still want that work to remain my main focus. I also have a chronic pain condition which makes work outside the home difficult. I am not looking to make huge amounts just enought to help fund my art practice and pay for a few extras here and there. My inital target would be £250 a month (about $400 in US dollars).

I'd really like some honest feedback on if this is possible and how to go about monetizing blogs and videos?

Thank you in advance for your time and advice.

Yes. It is possible to earn out of your personal interest blog. However, warning to you, you need to blog consistently to be able to get the amount of income your desired. Don't expect to start earning the very next day or week.

Next, expect yourself to use social media so that it helps to bring in traffic. It is not a must but still, it allows more forms of traffic to your blog.

    Hope it helps.

Jackson, thank you for your response that is helpful. What consitutes consistant blogging daily or say twice a week? I think I would need time to put together interesting posts so everyday seems unlikely. I really don't have a clue how to use social media, I am not adversed to using it a bit but I don't want to just be spaming people, the hope is that the content will be of good enough value to bring readers in.

I am currently living with family so have time to start the blog and allow it to build up without expecting immediate income. How long would it take normally to start making money from a blog?

Any advice on books about personal blogs to generate income?

Although you can make big money writing blogs and doing videos, I am not a big fan.
I will give you the quickest method of starting to make money online.

    1. Do some research on your niche: Look on amazon.com and check out the ebooks about your interests and look at the best sellers. Look at why they are best sellers and find out what specific information they are offering. If people are buying it, then it makes money!

    2. Set up a squeeze page offering a free gift about your niche: Not going to go into too much detail here, but a squeeze page is basically a one page website where you will offer a free gift to your website visitor in exchange for their email address. By collecting their email address you can market to them for the rest of their lives.

    3. Offer great information and promote great products: Blog posts, videos, etc.. about your niche. In between the valuable helpful information you are offering you will promote products related to your lists needs and desires. That is where you make the big money.

    Hope that helps

you could make money only with a blog and an AdSense account,
but you must write 1-2 articles a day, you must know right Adsense strategy and your themes must be
    "tradable".

If you have specific knowledge you must open a website/blog and create your own product.
In this case you need some PPC (you have to study a bit) to get targetted trafic into your site.

Dave, thank you for your response and advice. I will do as you say regarding the amazon ebooks that was helpful.
I'm afraid I didn't even know what a "squeeze page" was although after looking them up I have seen them before of course. Often I have to say I don't think much of them as they often seem to be away just to get your email from you and then send endless spam. I assume they can be used better e.g. regular relevent newletters or updates on the blog with occasional product plugs? I really don't have a physical product at all except some ideas for ebooks and courses etc. It would be good to get some interest from other businesses selling products related to my niche via reviews, give aways etc. Other options include making my own product or sources equipment from china etc to sell but this makes it more into a proper business when I really want to put most of my focus on my art.

Winner marketing, thank you for your reply I will look into adsense to see how that might work with my blog. I am very dubious about writing 1 - 2 articles a day. I just don't see how I could have the quality I want for my blog and keep churing out at that rate. You see I am not very motivated about things I am not passionately interested in but when I am I get obsessive and become a bit of an expert. My main blog idea is about something I read widely about and experiment with daily I want the blog to be personally satisfying to me as a place to crystallize my own reading and research. It is perhaps a bit of a technical blog but not about computers or such.

Again I don't have a product as such except text based and a problem for me might be offering something fresh in an ebook for example which isn't offered on the blog for free although I see lots of successful blogs selling books based on blog content, so perhaps that isn't such a big deal.

I don't know what PPC is or how to get targetted traffic but I will look it up.

    Thank you again.

I'll just be honest...to really maximize your results having a general blog about a multitude of personal interests will be a hard cookie to make money with.

It is almost always better to have a specific, narrow topic to focus on.

You will get more targeted traffic and ultimately more people who are interested in spending money.

From my experience, this has almost always been the case.

Maybe others have different experiences, I don't know

    But not me

Hi Robert, Thanks for your response and advice. I think the way I wrote my OP made it seem like I might be doing a general interest blog but what I actually meant was having either one blog based on a single area of interest or several blogs each based on one of my key area's of interest as opposed to just one big bloggy mish mash!

I totally agree that blogs looking to make income have to be specific.

Hi all, another question I have is if I focus on creating the content and so on, is it possible for me to outsource the bulk of the technical stuff of marketing like backlinks and getting extra traffic? I have heard that you can get some stuff done via Fiverr would that be feasible?

    Great question.

Understanding the platforms such as google, bing and other major search engines and how they operate if you want SEO to be your main traffic source. Another benefit of owning your own blog is the social exposer you get when people like and share your content.

Set a goal and a plan to achieve this. There really is no saying how long it can take but there are certain things that you can implement that will get your content and material indexed and in the serps like with 24 hours and even under today.

That's my main thing I would worry about at first with this method. Worry about optimizing right now not monetizing. One you have steady traffic you can learn from them and monetizing will be much more fun and rewarding to both parties.

Hi EPoltack77, thanks for the reply. I agree that I want to build the blog initally and the main thing I want to do is actually produce quality, useful content that people like and share.

Again I have no real understanding of SEO or how google etc work and how to get myself in a decent position in regards to that so if anyone can point me in the direction of a good guide on such things for newbies such as websites and books that would be great.

When you start a new website people will only view it as valuable as you do. The days of set it and forget it sites are way long gone.

You will need to write on your blog, have a specific area of interest in which to concentrate and you will need to promote your blog in some way. Either through social media or paid ads.

Honestly, though, you need to be somebody already for anyone to find interest enough to read your writing about what you like personally. Those days are also gone because there is simply too much information online for anyone to pay attention to anything except what they want to pay attention to.

There is no harm in doing what you are writing about, but it is a fair amount of work, not just creating content but in promoting it as well.

Thank you Michael. I appreciate your honesty and perhaps you are right. At the moment I believe that the area of interest I plan to focus on is a very popular one but that I do have a unique take and am appealing to a demographic who are overlooked but probably have more spending power. It is very much discussing and offering solutions to readers so it isn't just about me writing about fashion or food.

My main concern is that my posts might be too in depth or technical for most readers so I need to see how that will pan out. I am already a regular poster on one niche forum and I plan to join others and hopefully I can link to my blog in the signature which may build some traffic.

The main thing is that the blog will be useful orginal, well reseached content. I am doing this in part for myself to collate my own findings on this subject. I will try to market it but I accept it might not work out.

Videos do not have to show your face. You can create a screen card or a series of cards (slideshow). You never have to show your face - but keep it short depending on your target market.

Posted on Youtube, these can bring in traffic to your site.

You can concentrate on video posts as a priority and then transcribe them or have someone else transcribe them for use on your blog or for an ebook.

I would advise you to give video a priority because with it, you can create many types of content, do it once and it can go right into your blog with a brief description. You can add transcribed article later.

Video is your best option and you'll save yourself a lot of time.

Essentially, if you create a website and get traffic, you can get money out of it. It doesn't matter what the topic is.

I find the concept of being a digital nomad interesting, so the link in my signature is purely a personal interest blog. There are no adverts or spammy sales message. I'll add an advert or sell a product once it gets to 50,000 views per month.

If you want to make money from blogging, it's going to take a long time.

As one member already mentioned, it's about consistency. It's all about consistency. The more you write, the more you can write.

You're an artist? Same thing, the more you draw, the more you can draw.

You have to think about where your money is going to come from. Who's your target audience?

If you want to earn from advertising, you're going to need a lot of readers. Just research what other websites charge for the amount of readers they get and you'll know how many readers you need.

Then there's affiliate marketing. This is like you acting as a salesman online to promote products of companies.

Then there's selling of your own products and services.

As artists, you can sell your art, or sell your experience by teaching. I know of an artist who paints daily and over years accumulate a lot of readers and now she sells her daily paintings for USD $100 a piece on eBay and is doing quite well.

Or you can use the website as a place to get leads so that you can get freelance jobs.

      Yes, you can.

Create engaging content that provides value and promote it.

      Ideas:
      -Funny Pictures
      -Top 10 posts
      -Videos
      -Top news in your niche.
      -info-graphics

Take what people like, and put your own spin on it.

      Promotion:

You need to post your blog post on Facebook, twitter, g+, stumbleupon, etc.

You need to have an audience, which takes time; I would Spend $1/day with Facebook like ads, until you get to 30,000 likes, at which point your posts will start to get some viral traction. When some of your posts do get some traction then you can boost it in FB for $5/day and you could start seeing some ROI with Adsense..

This is one.. of many strategies out there..

Any Traffic you get, you should captured to create a mailing list, to turn one off visitors, into re-visitors, then into buyers (affiliate/your own products)

      Thanks
