Question about Acrobat

I want to get more familiar with writing ebooks in PDF format. I think I just need to buy Adobe 9.0 and then distiller 5.0 comes with it. Is that correct, or can I download it free somewhere? I guess I'm really confused because I still dont understand how sites can offer it for free when the creator (Adobe) is charging for it. Is the quality the same? One more thing: Is there something simpler/better than distiller 5.0? Thanks in advance! Thanks a million!!

    No don't buy it, use something like Open Office which is free.

    Thanks Nathan. How difficult is it to convert documents to PDF? I'm "competent" when it comes to computers. Do you need to be a computer whiz, or can the average person do research and do it?

    There are a lot of ways to convert files to PDFs. If you're using Microsoft Word, you can just go to "Save As..." and make a PDF right from there (I'm using Word 2007, not sure about other versions having it built-in). Acrobat Pro (as opposed to Acrobat Reader, which is free) is probably the least cost-effective way to create PDFs.

    I guess the first question would be... in what format is your original document?
