Need some technical advice - something's wrong with my PC

Hi,

2 days ago, something happened to my PC.

When I boot up my PC, I see some HTML files downloaded in a popup box asking me whether to save or open them. These files are from MSN as I run Windows LIVE Messenger.

At the same time, as I open and run several of my software that connects to the internet, ie when software is opened, it loads a web page within the software interface. However, instead of loading the web page, a HTML file or text file pop-up asking me if I wish to save or open the file.

When I click open, it opens up in the browser, but obviously the file resides in the temporary folder.

Can someone pls advise me what to do? Thanks!

    Davion,

I'm no computer wiz-but that is strange behavior. Have you downloaded any strange files lately?

At any rate- I would download malwarebytes (freeware) and run a scan on your computer. I had 12 trojans 2 months ago and this software saved my life.

Now, I am running AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot and Malwarebytes to see what is wrong. Hopefully that problem can be fixed.

The last thing I want to do is to reformat. Errr....

    Thanks guys for your advice.

using 2 or more antivirus software simultaneously reducing the efficiency.
your problem. removal of at least 2 of your case would facilitate work on the computer and increased security.

I had a similar problem when one of the games I frequently play (Kids arn't the only ones who play ;P) when it got new anti-hacking software. Unfortunately the new software marked nearly everyone as hackers or botters and until the community figured out how to unblock your computer, you would get all kinds of strange behavior.

Such as firefox would try to download anything you clicked on, and windows would open the properties window for desktop shortcuts. Things like that. So if you run any software that trys to prevent botters or hackers it could be that. Other wise, if you havnt already download Avast and run a full scan.

      Good luck!

        Davion -

        Hi.

If the virus scanner doesn't turn up anything, it could be a legitimate installation that got corrupted.

A few things to try, assuming you're on an XP system:

        1) Make sure you have a backup of your critical files. Better safe than sorry.

        2) To clean up temp files, I'd recommend running Cleanup. http://stevengould.org/downloads/cleanup/CleanUp452.exe CCleaner is also good although in a few cases it may be too aggressive and clean up too much.

        3) Check out your msconfig to see if it's automatically loading an install program. Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig. Click OK and then the Start Up tab. It'll show what programs are being run at startup. If you see anything related to a Live Messenger install then you might want to uncheck the box.

          My advice....

          1. Back everything up! Be sure to save your critical data to another workstation or laptop. This is essential. Obviously be careful about what files you transfer, you dont want to spread the problem. Back up first before doing anything!!!!

1.a Avoid networking with other workstations while you are infected! Take the PC offline if you can during the fix.

          2. Identify firstly what you have before you start guessing what it might be. You need to know what it is in order to correctly fix it! Typically I look for certain wording or error messages that appear on screen and Google them. In most cases, you will either find an immediate solution or at the very least, others who are experiencing the same issue, that may provide useful help. As an idea, what exactly are the names of the HTML files you are asked to open?

          3. Look for bogus services running within Task Manager. If you do the above step you may find users are suggesting to look for a particular service that may be running. Kill the service then work towards removal.

          4. Check event viewer. Most often you will find something in there that may help you identify what you have, which in turn will help you work towards removing it. Also check msconfig as mentioned above.

          5. Check ad remove components. It may have installed itself, as an additional program. Highly unlikely but I always check "to see what might be lurking"

          6. Once you have identified it, use the right tools to remove it. Obviously whatever you have has bypassed your anti virus. Are you using the free version? I would suggest doing away with AVG free and getting yourself a copy of something decent. I used to use AVG free in the past but ended up buying a copy of a well known product due to it being far more reliable.

          7. Use the suggested Malware products as already mentioned. Ive found Malwarebytes to be the best, however there are numerous others that are just as effective. You should find everything you need over at MajorGeeks.com - Download Freeware and Shareware Computer Utilities. OR FileHippo.com - Download Free Software

          8. If you find youre not having any luck, post your problem on BleepingComputer.com - Computer Help Forums These guys can help with almost anything and have been around forever. You may have to post a hijack this log. Hijack this is available at both the sites mentioned above.

          9. Once you have cleaned your system, I would advise, updating your antivirus, running windows update and rescanning everything again with an anti malware spyware tool. Be sure to flush your browsers cache and restart through out the process at each step.

Hope this helps. Im an IT technician ex gov employee of 9 years, (although I quit my job 3 yeasr ago to take on IM full time so I may be a little rusty)

Anyway, I purchased your article cash robots ebook last week and was very impressed, thought I could give something back.

Best of luck, let us know how you go.

Be sure you ignore this advice. He obviously doesn't know what he's talking about.

Also - this should be a no-brainer, but I do tech support for a living & the simple stuff gets overlooked every day - be sure you update your AV, spyware, adware programs before scanning with them.

Not always. Running numerous anti virus applications can throw all kinds of false positives.

advise them to try to upload 2 major antivirus package e.g. Norton Antivirus and BitDefender and to test how I take PC . over 15 years to deal with antivirus protection and I am aware. I agree it probably does not update antivirus package, but must agree that it may not be in this cause.
To itself as to the post, as InternetMarketingIQ also recommend where possible to make a system restore

I'd use Spybot Search and Destroy as well to see if you can't find and delete files.

Did you try choosing a system restore point?

I assume you mean the temporary internet files folder.

Have you tried deleting the files that are there?

Let's see... AVG; that's one... Ummm... Welllll..... How about?....

If the OP doesn't know any better, he might actually uninstall the ONLY antivirus app he has. Probably not the best choice. Ad-Aware isn't going to help much at that point.

Sorry for the sarcastic tone, but the post I pointed out is at best uninformed, and at worst, possibly harmful. In addition, it did nothing to help out the OP.

I never suggested he was, I was simply making a reply statement. Besides as already said, running multiple antivirus programs concurrently can degrade performance and create conflicts.

Nobody's arguing this point. Then again, nobody's running multiple antivirus programs, either.

  • The first thing you want to do is a system restore back to a date that you know was working previously.

Then you want to run a complete virus and malware/adware scans.

I prefer Avast for Home use... but that's just me.

If this sequence doesn't work then it's time to back up the data. Scan it after it's backed up. And Reload.

I think a HTTP request is being generated on your PC. I mean, a command is being generated that tries to connect to your PC as a web server. If it happens on startup, I belive that a command should be added to your startup files.
