The Quest to Surpass the Half-Assed Project

Hello wise and good looking internet marketers!

I have long looked upon your work and lifestyle with envy and have on numerous occasions played around with different ideas for generating an income online. My curse, it seems, is that things at my day job haven't quite gotten bad enough to motivate me to truly throw down on a project and put more than half-an-ass into it.

Well, times have changed. I'm glad I got a little bit of experience before because now not only do I want out, I need to do something else.

For the next 2 months+ I have a good chunk of time to work on a project or three, put my whole ass into it and see if this is the life for me.

So I got started the other day. I began assembling a site in the vein of "mail your enemies glitter", and I now have what is only a nip and a tuck away from a minimum viable product. I'm using wordpress and woocommerce for the sole reason that I'm somewhat familiar with them.

If you fine folks would be so kind as to review my site and provide some sage wisdom I would be forever in your debt. I'll do your laundry, go pick up groceries or whatever. I'll totally make it up to you.

Thank you for your time and attention. I yearn to absorb your knowledge.

Cheers,

ThatNet

    Funny!

    Video!

Video of someone receiving the gag will definitely motivate sales. Go to fiverr and choose a commercial gig where they will do and say what you want them to. That's a winner.

    And that's my 2cents!

YES, thank you. I should add that to my Stretch Goals list - Humor it up and add video! The copy is all just the immediate brain fart I was having at the moment, so I think I have capacity left to make it much better. And VIDEO! Oh god VIDEO! You're totally right.

I guess my question would be why would someone pay a company to put a printed out 8.5x11 picture of the middle finger into an envelope and send it without a return address when they could just print out an 8.5x11 picture of the middle finger and send it without a return address?

Where is the value here? What can you even charge for this that would make it worth it for you to do? What differentiates you from all the other "mail-a" or "ship-a" businesses that tried to jump on the popularity (which is long gone) of the glitter bomb?

These kinds of things are gimmicks that only work once. It requires lightning in a bottle and novelty adoption online for the originals to get going, and for every one 'mail glitter' that works there are thousands of 'mail a something' ones that don't.

If this was a fun project that you were doing on the side for a gag and hoping might turn into a few dollars, I'd say go for it and see what happens. Who knows?

If this is to be your serious effort at making a good go of it in IM, putting in your whole ass, and generating revenue while you're not working for a couple of months, I'd say look for something more viable that isn't a copy of something that was a one in a million gimmick to begin with. Your time and effort deserve to be devoted to something that has a more realistic chance of succeeding.

Thank you for your feedback, I completely agree. I suppose the way I'm thinking of this is to demonstrate to myself that I can put one foot in front of the other in the digital space and produce something, anything, and use that experience to inform a more "businessy" project next.

If I get three sales out of this website I'll be happy. And in the mean time I'll be forced to learn the skills that I would use on a better idea.

There are a few unique things I want to eventually offer if I fully build out this site.
      1) Popup book style finger
      2) Get the glitter add-on options working correctly
      3) Add a novelty section with amazon affiliate links
      4) List the product on Amazon/eBay
      5) Smooooooth sales flow (Convenience - Why people won't do it themselves)
      6) Badass Marketing Campaign

I figure if I can do all this, I'll have a pretty good foundation to work out from. And in the mean time I can play around with my current state of frustration and do a little venting, flipping the bird.

Thousands of people are copying the glitter model and flooding Flippa with "me too" projects.

I applaud you for getting a product done, that puts you in the top 10% here. But my bet is, getting traction on this kind of thing will see diminishing returns. I would flip it fast and move onto creating real value.

Wow, thanks! I hadn't even considered this. Is there a ballpark range these type of copycat sites are going for? I'd like to build it out further just for the experience, but as soon as I have an idea I want to really move on this thing serves little purpose to me aside from a few chuckles.
