Yes I have created an internet marketing forum since 1 month ago, a real one is here http://www.internetmarketingstar.com
It's in top 10 Google.com with online advertising forum, advertising forum or internet marketing forum keyword.
After you have one, it's effective for you to have your members or new friends come your community.

There's numerous ways to go about this. Maybe you want to consider driving traffic via YouTube. This is very big for the health and fitness niche.

You might also want to consider using Social Media. Take Facebook for example... if you join related groups (non spam groups), and start connecting with people on there, sooner or later people will become aware of your forum.

Another suggestion might be to drive traffic through a funnel, and promote your forum on the backend.

    There's plenty of ways...

I used to be an mod then admin back in 2009 for a very popular health and fitness forum. We had over 10,000 members and the majority of it back then was generated via SEO, YouTube videos and Email Marketing.

Somewhat related to the first answer.

I've always known Vbulletin as the platform to use long term. There's others out there, but Vbulletin would be my recommendation.

    Hi DURABLEOILCOM

Someone else asked this same question a few days ago, so I will give the same answer.
Why do you want to create a forum, are you trying to look for a way to monetize your website. Because that is a bad way to do it.

If you want to create a successful forum, simply find someone who has created successful forums and ask them to teach you how to do it. That is the best way to learn.
Now if you want to effectively monetize your website, it is better to

    1. Create a website with great content

    2. Create a paid monthly membership site, with even more great content than you website is offering

    3. Market your paid membership site to your website visitors to get more people to sign up to your membership site.

The more people you get, the more passive you get.

Just find some forum sites related to your keywords and use them.

Running a forum is a full-time job. It's thankless, extremely difficult and almost impossible to monetize, although the 'dreamers' whom have never done it will be the first to tell you how incredibly easy it will be.

Plus, do you really want to put up with people like me, all day. :-)

      Cheers. - Frank

I had one built on SMF for about a year and it was constant spam cleanup duty.

Getting engagement is difficult at the start. You need say 100 lurkers for every active poster. Can you draw 1000 people, just to have 10 who are posting?

The only way I have seen forums work is as an addition to paid membership content and coaching programs. In other words, locked off from the prying fingers of the public and for paying customers only. They then have buy-in to be there and engage.

A previous company I worked for had a phpbb forum and it was constantly getting spammed so we ended up closing registration.

I would suggest using software such as jive or vbulletin, when it comes to security I would personally stay away from free forum software or any I didn't completely trust. If it gets hacked it could seriously harm your business.

Get satisfaction have an interesting system where people can ask support questions and also rate for new features, I think its free to start with too.
