Tip For People With No Book Budget

Kindle Unlimited.

A lot of people don't realise this, but if you go through KDP Select, your book is automatically enrolled in Kindle Unlimited.

That means for $10 a month, you can read ANY book that was published through KDP Select. As many as you want. Along with a whole bunch of other books that have opted-in to the program.

Jay Levinson's "Guerilla Marketing" is $9.99 for Kindle, for example, but on Kindle Unlimited I can read it for free. Boomm, money's worth for the month in one book.

I'm a big proponent of the basic method, "read ten good books on a subject and you know more about it than 95% of the world."

Right now, there's a book by Michael Stawicki called "Slicing the Hype" about how to find GOOD ebooks on any subject at Amazon. (I don't know this person and haven't read this book. It just popped up when I looked in the "Business and Money" category.)

It's on Kindle Unlimited. You could read that for free, then use what you learn to find a bunch of good books and read THEM for free.

Entering a new niche? Read some books. Having a problem in your business? Read some books. Trying to start a new project? Read some books.

And every Kanye-West-style "proud non-reader of books" can eat your dust.

I prefer free eBook. Just google the eBook and sometimes it will come out in search result.

That's great advice. Thanks for sharing. Does it cost $10 to enrol your book through KDP select in the first place then?

It costs nothing to enroll your book. The Kindle Unlimited subscription is $10 a month, and at any given time you can have ten books "checked out" to your Amazon account at no added charge. Authors get paid out of a fund through some process I haven't really researched and therefore can't explain in any detail.

It's almost like the Amazon Public Library.

Is it a wise idea to enroll your book in kindle select, especially if you just create it as a lead magnet?

You get paid every time someone reads your book via KU (pay rate changes each month and has been as low as $1.01 and as high as $2.10; but usually is about $1.50)

By being in Select, you are also allowed to do Free Days (offer your book for free 5 days out of every 90 days).

A lot of the KU naysayers, will tell you that KU causes you to lose money, based on the idea that every borrow would have been a sale. However, I've not seen that. I'm still getting the same rate of sales as I did before KU came out, and now I'm getting KU income ON TOP OF the sales income. Plus, every time I do the 5 Free days, I get a big spike in sales across all my other titles for the next few days.

So even if you are using it for a product lead, Select is good, because KU and the Free Days will help get more readers' eyes on your product.

There are a lot of people who will buy your book, there are also people who will ONLY borrow books and if they can't borrow it, you just lost a reader. And then there are the freebie hunters who never pay for books at all and won't pay the $10 to KU borrow either, and by being in Select you get your book in front of them too. By putting your book in Select you get it in front of three completely separate groups of readers: The buyers, the borrowers, and the freebie hunters.

I love Select. I have 170+ books on amazon and all but 1 of them are in Select (it's not because it was previously published in an anthology and the text of the book must be EXCLUSIVE to amazon Kindle in order to qualify to be in Select.)

Well, duh, ESPECIALLY if you created it as a lead magnet. Lead magnets aren't supposed to generate money in and of themselves, they're supposed to generate LEADS. You want READERS more than you want buyers, because the $5 or whatever you charge for your book in the first place is nothing.

What you want is the $5k+ client that falls out the back. Don't turn your nose up over a $3 royalty.

Doesn't make any difference to me as a reader. I don't care what the author gets paid.

Is there a unique search feature or filter for books that are in KU? I'd definitely consider it, but I hate the idea of crawling through each book in a genre to find the one that I can check out.

There's a "Kindle Unlimited Eligible" filter on the website.

Edit: Also, sorting by "Price (High to Low)" strips out all the cheap stuff and gets you to the real books pretty fast.

If you are already logged into amazon then click this link and that will be all KU books.

      https://www.amazon.com/Kindle-eBooks...KidleUnlimited

Just type what you are looking for in search box and they are all KU books.
I have not figured out an easy way to get to that screen yet without this link.

I DO care what the author gets paid, hence the reason I cancelled my KU membership.

What exactly are you saying? You will elect to pay more money by buying books individually, just so authors can make more?

That will show Amazon, all right. Cancel the $10 a month membership, and just buy books outright. I'm sure they're just mortified.
