Veterans: What Conversations Should We Be Having?

by @tjr
10 replies
The monster threads going on the past few days are about just how crappy this place is getting. They're right, the level of conversation here sucks.

So lets change it.

People complaining about the conversation here: what is it you want to talk about instead? How do we introduce these kinds of topics.

If any change is going to happen it'll need to come from the user base. Let's give it a shot, then blow this popsicle stand if it doesn't work.

No one is stopping you from giving out all the free advice that you desire. Most of the posters that I see, as demonstrated by the ridiculous questions they ask, don't deserve a minute of my time. If they were willing to pay me, I doubt I would want them as clients. :-)

I don't see where a conversation on 'giving' will make this place better in any way, shape or form. It doesn't address the issue of how to fix what is already broken.

      Cheers. - Frank

My impression is that few people are actually DOING and most are lurking, wondering WHAT to do.

I started a thread about increasing conversions on landing pages, and those were answers to questions a person ACTUALLY DOING would ask.

It quickly fell to the bottom.

People want magic bullets. They want guarantees. Real life doesn't work that way.

When I see a person asking a specific question, it tells me they are trying. And that I will support by giving specific advice if it's in my wheelhouse.

I think a lot of people want someone to do all the hard work for them instead of asking for advice and taking action on it. These are the kind of people that will still be wheel spinning in 2 years' time. If someone asks for advice, they should listen to all the various responses, make an informed decision, then take action. A bad idea that is tried out is better than a good idea that is not acted upon.

The level of discussion has kind of been the same as it always has. You just don't have the same cartel of people dominating conversations to push their collective agenda.

It's normal to have more newcomers asking silly questions, rather than a bit more experienced people who are actually DOING something and have more specific queries.

That's just how it is and has always been.

The reason why only 1% "makes it", is because they try 99999 different things, until something clicks...Of course, asking questions on forums is a part for all of us, but some people get stuck in this never-ending "what to do" mode until they quit and go watch funny cat videos on YouTube.

I joined in 2003 and I am not sure that this forum has gone as much downhill as people suggest. Before, there was much more newbie bashing and outrageous income claims. Now it is more newbie friendly and more realistic.

I personally think it's wrong to say that this forum has been flooded with "stupid questions"
What is a stupid question? Well, each and everyone of us was new in the beginning and we all wanted to earn quick money fast without putting anything in.
    Ain't that true?
So, if you think you have learned how to deal with this "moneymaking thing", why not give back what you learned? It won't cost anything. Not a single dime for any of us.

I asked a lot of questions when I first started up. There where people that commented with answers like "stupid question" and so on. And there was people that gave me advice and helped me.
When I look back, several of the people who had the "negative response" attitude, are still here, trying to make it to the top. And several of them that had a positive and helping attitude, are among the "big guys" today.
I think that says a lot. There will always be both types in forums like this. Just make sure to ignore the negativities and focus on the helping.

OK-here is a nice cliché for you - the only "stupid" question is one that has not been asked. I think the problem is that most of these "stupid" questions are being repeatedly posted by new users in one form or another.

People that are new to the forum should be encouraged to use the search function and they will probably get the answer to their question without starting a new thread.

Today's newbie may well be tomorrow's expert so let's help them to help themselves by pointing them in the right direction.

  • Yeah this is a newbie forum now. The only reason it still runs is because newbies still buy and pro's still post. You can answer the same question 3 times and newbs still wont know how to use the search feature or F* google!
