Video Store / Music Store - ONLINE EXPERIENCE - Now Just To Monetize It

Hello Fellow Warriors,

We all remember going to the video store and selecting a VHS / DVD or the music store and depending how old you are selecting a record / tape / cd.

I miss those days partly because of the SOCIAL aspect where you would always seem to bump into an old friend or someone you used to work with. It seems like a lot of that is missing in our society today. That random social meet up.

Getting to my point I've always wanted to some how develop this social aspect as much as it could be recreated online. Now my question to you is do you thing a forum that would allow members to post their top 5 movies to be seen from different genres and engaging in a social discussion back and forth would actually work online? Obviously, there would be a lot more too it than just that but recreating the bricks and mortar experience as much as it is possible over the internet. It wouldn't be the same but it could still be a lot of fun.

Give members certain options to be able to do different things to express themselves and then comes the second question of monetizing it.

Are the affiliate programs for movies and music really worthy of paying out decent commission? iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Fandango, are some of the more reputable ones I found. Are there any others?

How are others out there finding the movie and music affiliate niche? Or will it all end up downloadable for free and become irrelevant and a just like it's bricks and mortar version - dead?

I appreciate the input from all Warriors.

Thanks.

J

If you are referring to something similar to these, then yes, it might work.

Remember that besides websites that have a built in community, any such site (or anyone with an idea),
can also set up an additional page on Facebook, or twitter, and tons of other social media presence, which then automatically comes with a built in community where interaction can take place. People with low budgets usually choose to use one of the major social sites to start an interactive community in whichever niche.

    Thanks stoltingmediagroup.

I am wondering how long term the movie and music business will work in terms of people actually willing to pay for it?

    Appreciate it.

It's a great question, and I've discussed this topic with many different people from musicians to labels, etc, and attended several state of the industry type events over the years. The challenge in answering this, is that with with today's technology and everything else that affects the industry changing so rapidly, it's almost impossible to predict what will happen next.

It's pretty much a free for all within the current existing laws and regulations, for anyone to set up some sort of brand new service that delivers movies / music etc, and thereby changing the entire game really quick.

This would of course have to be done through agreements with the music providers etc. YouTube for example has one of those types of services that has some very unique types of agreements set up.

Professional Artists, actors, and the likes want to be reimbursed for their work, as opposed to working for free. Related companies want the same thing (money) for their product. How else does anyone pay their rent?

Therefore any company that wants to offer music for free (legally) will always have to come to an agreement with the music providers as to how they can make that happen.

Consumers of course would love for music, movies etc to be free. Some go as far as downloading from illegal sites etc to get it free. But what this creates is a crumbling of the existing system, as you have seen from records stores closing over the years.

    So what happens is:

    1. Consumer steals music for free.
    2. Record stores close.
    3. Consumer complains and ask why? "how come" "We liked record stores!"
    "Bring them back"!

Well, they caused it in the first place. Right?

The answer to your question really is, people (consumers) will have no choice but to pay, unless they want to steal, or unless they use some sort of service (today or in the future) that allows them to not have to pay directly for music and movies.

For example cable companies (internet / TV, etc) could charge an incorporated fee into your cable / internet bill, which then allows you to get your music free etc.
Similar to subscribing to movie channels etc.

Either way, music and movies, are no different from bread and butter.
It's a product, people make it, have rent to pay, thus people have to get paid for it somehow.

I don't think anybody wants to work for free just because their company is giving away their stuff for free, or because consumers demand it. It's just not going to happen, not in this system where you have to pay for food, etc.

So, whether people are "willing" to pay or not, may end up being their prerogative, in exchange for having access (legally) to music and movies, or not having access.

Similar to whether they are willing to pay for all those groceries at the cash register, or not.

Thanks stoltingmediagroup. That gave me a lot to think about. It really is a tough one to forecast the future of. I personally think that it can't be reversed from what it is now. People are so used to FREE that it can't be taken back to the days whey they paid $30 a CD for example. I remember those days very well. Maybe I'm being cynical about human nature but lets face it so many people today consider something intangible (downloadable) to be FREE or at least they think it should be FREE.

Thanks for your answer I'd be interested in further discussion on this but I'm moving tomorrow and won't be back up online for a couple weeks as it's taking that long for the internet guy to come out and hook it back up.

I'll have a look when I get back up online and we'll see if we can come up with some answers.

    Thanks again!
