Getting about 4 million pageviews a month, should I sell for my own ads?

I wouldn't waste your time with AdSense in this niche.

1. Ensure you're capturing opt-ins.
2. Monetization ideas: CPA offers, t-shirts, amazon, and yes ad space.

You should also be using that traffic to grow bigger. I never see this talked about and it's essential.

Those numbers can be used to grow...

1. Other websites
2. Social platforms
3. Video channels
4. Other lists

Just some ideas.

Thank you for your informative reply Tom!

Seeing as my website is very general I could basically feature ads for anything and nothing and therefore it's hard to know where to start. Is there a place or a forum where I can come in contact with bigger companies who customarily place ads on high traffic websites?

I replied to your identical thread in the ad networks section but figured I would paste it in here too just in case one or the other gets deleted.

I would do this before you start reaching out to advertisers

Who knows, a couple of tweaks to just your adsense units alone could add another $1K or more per month. I've seen it happen before.

Other networks you can try on your site is Content.ad, Taboola, and Outbrain. Having any one of those at the end of your posts can add anywhere from $1-$5 RPM to your earnings.

Also Media.net is solid too.

Just think doing some tweaking and adding more networks on your site can add another $2 RPM (just guestimating of course) to your overall earnings.

That would mean another $8K. That is a nice bump.

I will add that based on what you said you got in adsense revenue, your RPM was only about .75.

I haven't seen your site and where you have your adsense units, but I would venture to say you can get more out of adsense by changing to mobile optimized units and changing the placement of the units. That's just one example of a tweak you can make.

You may want to copy UPWORTHY's monetization strategy

Don't show any ads on your site BUT...

Use a popup that reminds people to join your mailing list

Conduct regular surveys to get the inside scoop on your demographic profile as well as niche preferences

Armed with that info, look for advertisers looking for SOLO ADS in certain niches

There are a few good sites to find interested advertisers.

Here is one good site I recommend:

You should also take some good time to do a research and find sites like the one I mentioned.

I would go for affiliate sales in T-Shirts and such. Look at dilbert.com and see the advertising there.

I would not do a pop-up as it may turn off some of your visitors definitely get a list going with incentives to join. Gather the niche info etc. Even if you don't gather niche info you could still send out Video of the day emails and such. The traffic should go up.

I totally agree with TOM, that would be a great way of maximizing profits.

Specially CPA offers, from networks like Mundo Media, Neverblue, Maxbounty, etc.

Hey man, cool numbers.

Don't ditch adsense just yet. Depending on seasonal things, demographics, countries plus a lot more your revenue can change. We had 1 post generate over $14,000 alone from Adsense. Just 1 post. But then as you say, some months we struggle to make half that - its up and down.

Some solid info in here about using other ad networks where you can. Taboola would be happy to set you up, their minimum for a site is 500,000 page views a month so you are good there. On average you get about $0.05 per click, people tend to click them as they are not views as ads....

T-shirts is an excellent move too - we also do this. We use sunfrog because unlike teesring etc the links are permanent and you will see sales coming in from all over once you get a few posts going. Think niche - if you run a humour post around a particular subject pick a tee in the same niche and slap your aff link on it for commissions up to 40% on each sale.

Hook me up if you want to chat further - I am finding it hard to speak with like-minded people on this. I have a FB group (signature) around this subject (for earners), come and join us. Its a small group where we just share ideas and stuff...

They were driving the traffic from somewhere other than FB, primarily -- using ads.

It did not sell in that auction. I don't know what ever happened to it. The reserve was over $100,000, I believe. One guy in the comments was crapping on it, saying he owned basically the same site and that such a site isn't worth even 20k because it doesn't have much built-in value -- once you stop the ads, the money stops. I don't know if that's true or not.

One thing, though: The seller believed he was being smartpriced.

Also, the seller had PDFs of his analytics and earnings and everything, so it was pretty interesting.

So do make money on actual arbitrage of FB ads/Adsense? Or does the profit kick in because of shares/virality?

Also, I'm curious about whether FB's clampdown on reach is having much of an effect on your traffic?

Be sure that you have a clearly defined market who your site is after. It's difficult to sell ads to people if their target market is not one who would visit your site. As long as you're adding value and they see that you are doing so, while knowing their market will gain some benefit then you're good to go!
