Here is what most people wont tell you..

Making money online isn't hard but it does require work. If you don't spend the time required to set your business up then your business isn't going anywhere.

Do NOT start an autoresponder and start selling affiliate offers, or even worse your own offers, until you have at least a complete grasp of what you are doing. If you don't know how to set up an autoresponder then you are not ready to make money.

Making money requires work on your part, sometimes even money. When you are starting out you only have two assets. Your time or your money, the more of one you use the less of the other is needed, but you are going to need both to make a real business instead of a hobby.

There are steps that every new marketer has to go through to be a success at internet marketing.

Learning how to set up a domain name, how to set up a web hosting account, how to tie your website to your domain name, how to set up a payment system, how to sign up for and set up an autoresponder, and several other things are going to be required for you to make even a modest amount of money.

This isn't hard, it's not drop dead easy but its not hard either. The main problem with being new is that you aren't even aware the things you don't know. If you don't take the time to do research before coming to forums asking the same questions over and over you will never get anywhere, and will find it hard to get any help.

You will find that the more experienced people are willing to help you if you do the basic research so that you can ask a direct question about a specific part of something.

Either on this forum or on google searching is your friend. You will learn more from searching for answers to direct questions than you will from anything else.

Do some searching and figure out what you don't know but need to learn then you can ask questions that have a much higher chance of getting properly answered.

I completely agree!! Making money online is not rocket science, or anything too complicated. Sure, the basics of registering a domain, setting up a website, etc may seem complicated if you are new to all this. But there are tons of resources online to help anyone with these steps.

As for the making money part, it's simple, JUST SELL. Sell services, sell products, sell membership. Learning is not going to earn you a cent, you just need to sell, and that's it.

Thanks for this...it is absolutely spot on. I have just finished reading another post full of people debating endlessly whether a particular product from a particular marketer will or won't work, and whether it is a scam or not...only one or two people pointed out that as long as the product itself is not deceitful or dishonest, everything depends on whether or not the buyer is prepared to put in the effort and (God forbid!) actually put in some hard work!

Internet business is like any other...if you sell for more than you buy, you make a profit. End of story!!

Yes, making money online does need time and hard work. And you should treat it like a real business, not just a hobby or a game. You should avoid information overload which is one of the biggest mistakes many new internet marketers make. You really need to be patient.

The fact of the matter is most people just cannot do this business. It ain't rocket surgery or brain science but it sure ain't a lemonade stand either.

It takes a tremendous amount of patience and follow through.

I know I have been knocked down so many times in this business. I mean after experiencing years of Success...BOOM I have gotten my head handed to me.

The thing is most people just flat out do not have the Constitution to be able to get hit so hard and then pick themselves back up.

        They just don't !!

These people are Wage Slavers. And there is nothing wrong with that.

Nice basic information. But I think it's a bit of a stretch to say most people won't tell you that information. Most will if you ask or haven't already read it in most basic Internet Marketing books.

What most people in Internet Marketing circles won't tell you is specific (not general) ways to ...
      • "Position Yourself" so the people most likely to buy from you can recognize you from the crowd of competition like a neon sign.
      • Create Your Own Unique Brand so you immediately stand out from the crowd even more.
      • Profit in "saturated but lucrative markets" without getting lost in the crowd.
      Or
      • How to "create and innovate" for yourself - as opposed to just following, trying to copy or imitate someone else, or their "so-called" get rich program. Along with hundreds or thousands of others.
Search most Internet Marketing related books, courses or even this Warrior Forum and see how many times you see the above subjects discussed ... even by the so-called Guru's. But I can almost guarantee you They've Mastered those subjects. Don't you find that strange?

Unfortunately, these are "marketing" topics, rather than "selling" topics.

Most new entrepreneurs (heck, probably most of the old ones, too) rarely ask these questions... and if they do, they are more often than not just paying lip service to the concept of "marketing". It's even more rare for them to 1) appreciate that information and/or 2) to act on it.

        • How to "create and innovate" for yourself - as opposed to just following, trying to copy or imitate someone else, or their "so-called" get rich program. Along with hundreds or thousands of others.
In my mind, this is your most important point - and I work at creation/innovation everyday... but I'm not sure I know how to "teach" someone else how to do that.

So many enter this career path looking for someone else to give them a "blueprint". To my way of thinking, everyone needs to create their own!

You make an important point. And perhaps the reason why so many people crash and burn. They try to sell before they get all the marketing aspects established.

Most people just rush through, skip steps, even ignore the simple marketing steps I mentioned, plus others. Yet they wonder why the I.M failure rate is so high.

Everyone likes to hurry up and start building a blog, a list, spending money on ads or selling, etc. The fun and sexy stuff. "Just start selling - it'll work out" is the mantra in this Forum. Laying a solid marketing foundation gets dirt under your fingernails. It's the unglamorous side no one likes to talk about or do - if they can help it. Which makes it so powerful to those Internet Marketers who take the time to do it right.

            That' an excellent point Robert.

You can't "teach" someone creativity ... because it's already in them. But it's possible to help someone bring out ... what's already in them!

Most people think they're not creative. But the fact is if you have an imagination(which everyone does) you can bring out/stimulate your creativity.

In its simplest form, creativity is just "finding/discovering" better ways to do things. If you think about it, most of us do that almost everyday on a minor scale without even trying.

            We "find/discover"
            • A shorter way to work, to the store, to the freeway!
            • A faster way to cook, repair or clean something!
            • A better way to talk to, convince or argue with someone!
            • An easier way to surf the net, do a chore, shop at the supermarket!
            • A better way to have sex. (still looking)!
            ... And more!

Although on a minor scale, those are all examples of creativity. What others can do is show you how to ramp it up, aim it at something specific and ... pull the trigger.

The "Genius Cave Man" didn't create the wheel, he just discovered ways to make things better with it.

I've always been curious...what if "make money online" was suddenly switched with "build a business online" ?

How many people would that instantly turn away?

Just mentioning the word 'business' automatically sounds like hard work to some, so they wouldn't even bother to begin with. But what is MMO really? It's a business, that's online. 'Make money online' just sound fluffier and comforting, doesn't it?

To me, this is what most people won't tell you

Ha, ha. You make some good points. Personally "build a business online" sounds better to me, because that's what I and many others do. But unfortunately, most don't. They look for quick money making plans, programs, schemes and techniques.

Check out the majority of the questions you see in this forum. Most are not how to build a business "type" questions.
                Most are ...
                • How to make a sale/money fast questions (with the least amount of work or money).
                • How to build a list, squeeze page questions.
                Or
                • How to build a blog questions, etc.
The word 'business' is seldom, if ever, used in any way, shape or form. Unless it's talking about other peoples business.

                  Precisely.

Anything related to positively building a business will sound good to the actual business people.

Others who have no intention of building a business, even as a little side operation, will just pass it by like a mental filter, sorting out what they want to hear against what sounds pleasing and nice.

That's the whole idea of MMO though. It's pleasing and can get easily hyped up IF the incorrect image is instilled into the person.

I've been to various workshops where newbies looking to get started are so skeptical because they have no mindset for business. They're just looking for a quick and easy side income, and they think MMO is generally crap. That's just the wrong foundation to start off with.

And it is, as they've reacted to the stuff presented to them.

Once the truth gets swallowed: that there's work involved, not everything will yield positive ROI, you need proper sales funnels and customer retention in place to maximize revenue etc etc etc...you sort the business people from the hobbyists and the real fun begins.

That's another thing most won't tell you: the real journey of starting out and making success out of almost nothing (resource wise).

and I've been making a full time living online for well over 10 years.

I'm not rich by any means, but depending on what you create/sell, how you position your product(s), how well you network with others, and many other aspects of this business you can do very well with no ad spend whatsoever.

Internet marketing doesn't resolve around setting up an auto-responder, so if you don't know how to do it, then it's not the end of the world.

And listing building is not a 100% requirement for making money online. Yes, "the money is in the list", but the money is also in hundreds of other places.

It's all about finding what works best for you, or probably what you can do better than others, and then scaling it to the max. We are all different, so horses for courses.

Well said, Mr. Slater, as always.

Even though I'm experienced in creating online experiences, since I have no lists the first part of my biz plan involves making what will probably be a series of trips down dead-ends before offering anything for sale. I'll be looking for feedback, so I don't want to put in a bunch of ads that may not appeal to my target and will interfere with viewer focus.

    1. Is my target audience interested in what I'm presenting?
    2. Are they commenting?
    3. Are they referring friends?
    4. Are they sending me emails with questions?

If yes to all of the above right out of the gate, then WOW! Amazing. If not, adjustments will have to be made. Could take me a month, could take me 3 months. Dunno.
