How to get more traffic from India (1.3 billion population)?

India is the world's second most populous country after China, with a current population of almost 1.3 billion. India has around 15 official languages, with Hindi and English being the most widely spoken. India's economy is the ninth largest in the world as of 2015.

A lot of people with websites based in the US or Western Europe do not seem to care much about traffic from countries such as India. However, for those who do care about getting any type of global traffic (perhaps just to boost their site's global ranking), please post ideas on how to get more traffic from India in this thread.

-- Feel free to give examples of anything you did that led to success. e.g., I had a site in which I discussed a recent India social media phenomenon (I related it to my main subject), and I got decent traffic from India.

-- Any Indian sites on which you can advertise for reasonable rates? Or do they have something like Google Adwords in which you can participate and place ads on Indian sites with related content?

-- Have any of you had success hiring Indian people from Odesk, Elance, Fiverr etc... that can write stuff for you in Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati etc.. and also advise you on what to write about for the Indian market?

-- Are there any popular local Indian search engines and social networking websites? It seems that unlike China (where Baidu, Weibo and others dominate), Google, Facebook and Twitter dominate in India just like in the US.

There is no popular local search engine, google is the dominant search engine, b'cuz for many people internet is just 'Google'. And yes the popular social media sites are Facebook, twitter and also Instagram which is gaining quite some popularity.
I have no idea about the language part but I guess most of the people who use internet are the one's who are familiar ( and pretty much used to ) with English, so maybe you don't need to dive into other languages, cuz there are many !!!!!!!

    Hope that helps!

I created 2 sites and targeted asian people.
First one was a timeline covers website and second one was website for free android apk's.

Both of them have been very successful and I earned a lot from adsense.

you can advertise from infolinks and chitika if you don't have adsense.

paid traffic comes from facebook and adwords. famous sites in india are scoopwhoop.com, desinema.com etc.

You can also use outbrain.com ads for traffic to your pages as it shows viral content on pages/websites.

I have a full time writer and a seo guy from India.

Feel free to contact me for any more info about Indian market.

Can i know what you are looking to launch in indian market ?

Honestly Facebook is more popular than Google due to its mobile version so you can use Facebook ads heavily.

Languages as you said English and Hindi are very common so you can use them .

As far as freelancing/outsourcing is concerned ,i will suggest Odesk and Elance to get reliable workers .Fiverr Sucks .There are some nice agencies from India you can hire for promotion in local language .

You can purchase indian and china traffic for really cheap fairly easy on popunder networks.

However if you want to target indian and chinese traffic organically you will have to tailor your content toward these markets.

For example creating a blog on indian pop music, indian current events, indian celebrities. Dating in india, dining in india, etc.

You can't target a specific area without including something specific to that location in your content.
