How to get more traffic from China (1.4 billion population)?

China is the world's most populous country with a current population of almost 1.4 billion. The vast majority of the country speak's one language -- Mandarin. China's economy is the second largest in the world after the US as of 2015.

A lot of people with websites based in the US or Western Europe do not seem to care much about traffic from countries such as China. However, for those who do care about getting any type of global traffic (perhaps just to boost their site's global ranking), please post ideas on how to get more traffic from China in this thread.

-- Feel free to give examples of anything you did that led to success. e.g., I had a site in which I discussed a recent Chinese social media phenomenon (I related it to my main subject), and I got decent traffic from China.

-- Any Chinese sites on which you can advertise for reasonable rates? Or do they have something like Google Adwords in which you can participate and place ads on Chinese sites with related content?

-- Have any of you had success hiring Chinese people from Odesk, Elance, Fiverr etc... that can write stuff for you in Mandarin and also advise you on what to write about for the Chinese market?

-- If you have an entirely English based site like I do, do you write specific pages in Mandarin to attract Chinese visitors, or do you just write English pages that cover some aspect of China (celebrity, product, region, politics etc...). So far I have only tried the latter and not tried to mess around with adding Mandarin pages. I have been assuming that Google translate or other browser based translators are readily accessible to Chinese citizens who wish to see my English content in Mandarin. However...

-- To rank high in Chinese search engines such as Baidu, I assume I must have Mandarin pages? Any tips and tricks to rank high in Chinese search engines for my English keywords as well as for their corresponding Mandarin keywords?

-- Any tips to target Weibo and other Chinese social networking sites? Can you create English language pages on there, or do they have to be in Mandarin to get any kind of traffic? Has anyone hired a Chinese person from Odesk, Elance, Fiverr etc... to help with social networking site marketing in China?

I can think of many other points, but will leave this as is for now in case few people respond with their experiences and ideas.

well, there may be 10 ads ahead of the first SEO result. even if you managed to rank #1 for your page, the traffic is much less.

I still think at this point that China is pretty much cut off from the rest of the world. Perhaps not as much as North Korea is but it will be a few more years still until this market really starts to open up...The potential here is limitless. Potential for a lot more customers...and competitors

I have a Wordpress blog in English that is quite popular (1,500 unique visitors per day). Google has indexed 15-20 times more pages than Baidu when it comes to my blog.

I wonder if I should translate all my most popular blog posts into Chinese and save them in a separate directory/folder (but on the same domain name) for Chinese visitors? And then Baidu will index more of my pages?

"When" and "If" China opens its doors to the world Internet wise, there is going to be a massive shakeup that will benefit some and hurt others. But, since the China governing elite is still 95% communist, I don't see them opening their doors to the world anytime soon.

You are absolutely right, first of all if a country has a huge population it does not necessarily mean that it's good to target them with what ever you have. Clicks from China would only be good if there was any use to it, if they are your target audience or actually can SEE and interact with your GAds or other services.
Google in China is useless so you have to look into Alibaba, Baidu and Soso. One more search engine is coming up which I don't remember the name, Google it!!!

Simply getting traffic does not do you any good, look for right traffic.

When you talk about "those who do care about getting any type of global traffic" . . .

To me at least, marketers should be concerned with getting specific kinds of traffic, i.e., very targeted traffic that will potentially become a part of their product or service audience. I personally don't think they should be concerned with "getting any type of global traffic" as you stated, just to try to improve SE rankings (for example).

In fact, marketers should always be looking for ways to cut out the traffic sources and prospect places that are not converting. So if your offers are being accepted and purchased by customers in China . . . then by all means learn about that demographic. Do some testing on a small scale to understand the potential that this country may have for your business.

But I would advise against investing heavily in Chinese traffic just to help your rankings or to have a more "global" presence.

Niche targeted traffic is what's important to me - not the country where that niche traffic comes from.

I am not sure what product/service you are going to be promoting the a Chinese audience but you should keep in mind that even though China has a huge population, their average wages are approximately 1/5 that of the average USA worker -

Source. National Bureau of Statistics. There has been near double digit growth in the national average annual wage for urban employees since 2004, according to China's National Bureau of Statistics, with the average wage reaching 56,339 yuan in 2014 (around US$9,000)

This means they do not have the discretionary income available like we do in the USA.

One note of interest about your thoughts regarding making Mandarin translated pages - my business model has primarily been B2B since starting in IM in 1988 (AOL ads) - from about 2002 to 2008 many of the orders for the service/products we offered came from China. Many (not all) Chinese learn English as a 2nd language and in some instances speak it better than some Americans I have had spoken with.

Also, in regards to traffic from China and India - when checking the stats on my now defunct site, Chinese traffic would often show up as the 2nd, 3rd or 4th highest source but that was also due to the fact we offered a service that their exporters sought.

We have a new B2B site that is about one year old and specializes in a service/product that is not quite as sought after as our previous venture but I just looked at the stats today and Chinese traffic was listed as the 4th highest source.

This is not to say the proverbial "build it and they will come" but depending upon what it is you are offering, that might just be the case.

    My tips:

    1. If you're serious about getting visitors from China then host the site inside China itself as it's very slow to access Western hosted sites from within China itself.
    2. Use a design with loads and loads of links.
    3. Look at Chinese websites and see how different they are from Western websites (i.e. 2 above).
    4. Chinese people tend to use the Internet for play, rather than business.

You can definitely do well in this market. I studied for a while at a Chinese university and there was a busy part of the campus reserved for deliveries of stuff the students had bought and got delivered from online stores.

to be frank , Folks from china perfect to purchase stuffs from their brand establish online store.

Why they will go amazon to buy a same product which their own china online store already selling it
" of course china also selling lots of fake products "
but for china folks mentality poor to average consumers don't mind purchase fake products at long it works

I feel is how to target their rich , well to do consumers. They willing to pay and indeed they like to purchase a lot!

I have a blog...am not selling any products. The traffic from China will definitely be relevant as my blog covers something that half of people in all countries care about at some point or other.

Moreover, even if not relevant traffic, my three Amazon CPM ads are doing well (geting over $1 per 1,000 page views PER AD) -- so all traffic is welcome!

Here are some real Facts! there is no Google or Facebook nor Twitter, the Chinese Government has locked down what goes on and is monitored hard.

I have a flatmate who has just come back after 3 months and during that time he could not call anyone or go on social media, when he did find away to call me to tell me was on his way home 2 hours later he had a knock on the door from the Internet Police.

If you try and game the system your site will be deleted and banned , if you have a partner in China they will go to jail.
I think you should look else where this is very much a close shop
