A Few Hosting Questions

About a month ago I signed up with GoDaddy for a domain name and hosting for 3 months. At the time I didn't have a clue about keywords and bought something which I can't use at the moment.

Anyway, when I signed up I had a choice of Linux hosting or Windows. I choose windows because I'm using XP on my PC. Today I had a look at hostgator and they only offer Linux hosting, with windows coming soon, so does that mean I can't use hostgator?

I want to get away from GoDaddy as everything is cluttered, complicated and slow, although domain names are cheap.

Also if I had 3 domain names do I have to buy 3 lots of hosting?

What is most peoples choice for hosting?

    Hi Tasha,

Go for CPanel hosting which is the easiest to manage. Godaddy uses their own in-house web hosting admin panel which in my opinion is like what you said, complicated. Hostgator provides CPanel and is my favorite and many marketers' favorite because of their ease of use, support and uptime.

The Windows, Linux hosting has nothing to do with your computer operating system. It is their server. Linux hosting is the most commonly used one. No problem with that if you choose it.

    You have 2 options here.

    1. Buy a basic hosting and use 1 domain as the main and the other 2 domain names as Addon domains. However, that means that your CPanel can be used only for the main domain but that is not too much of a problem at all as you can still setup your other 2 domains as per normal, ie FTP, install Wordpress blog, etc.

    2. Buy a reseller hosting package. I personally own a few of these. They give you unlimited domains to host and each comes with its CPanel. This allows you to run each domain independently.

    Hope I have been clear.

I build my new websites and blogs with these 2 default steps:

      1) register a domain with NameCheap.com
(there are coupons released to save each month)

      2) set up the site or blog on HostGator.com
      (very good support)

Run don't walk away from godaddy as fast as you can.

        1. Linux ftw
        2. godaddy sucks, I second namecheap
        3. most shared accounts will let you host unlimited domains so you would only need one hosting account. Bluehost and hostgator are good.
        4. I use wiredtree and softlayer for my "money sites" as anything but 24/7 guaranteed uptime is unacceptable when it comes to the monies.

I always go with Linux hosting that uses cPanel. It makes managing your hosting account very easy. I have been using HostGator for around five years now and have very few issues. The issues I did have were resolved quickly by support.

I also use GoDaddy to register domains and have never had a problem. I like them because you can find promo codes to discount the cost of the domain.

Thanks Davion, that's very helpful. I've just noticed that my hosting for GoDaddy, although I only ordered 3 months worth is has been set to renew automatically. Very crafty

Also thanks to everyone else too for the advice. I think I'll go with Hostgator for my hosting from now on

Hey there is no reason to run away from Godaddy.. I have used them and never ever had a problem. I just stay away from their user interface which is slow and use filezilla for ftp upload.

    Two things you should know:

    1. Always use Linux - don't worry, you can change to a linux host at any time so I recommend you do that straight away.

    2. Get the deluxe hosting - second from the bottom hosting package. This way you can run unlimited number of domains on the 1 hosting and its only about $6-7 a month. So you only need 1 hosting package.

Before you make things complicated have a look at the options I have mentioned and see how you go.

Plenty of people hate godaddy but I have never understood why. Maybe one day I will but my sites have never gone down and I pay a few bucks a month running several profitable sites with high traffic.

    Hope this helps

    Will

Linux based hosting is more SEO friendly and easy to promote over search engine. Though window hosting is not having bad in itself except htaccess file and redirection things are complicated one..

Once upon a time, GoDaddy had strict controls. The didn't allow Mod_rewrite and ionizer cubes, etc. Since then they are as good as any I have used. I have used 9 or 10 domain/host providers and GD has so far been the overall best, IMO (and the cheapest for what you get. for example, you can don't need deluxe to host as many domains as you like.) Each one seems to have their own little annoying stuff.

I've used GoDaddy to register over 350 domains and have been very satisfied with their service, support and swiftness.

On a Sunday morning, I just happened to glance at my emails and learned that my PayPal account had been charged over $100 because my domains were on "Automatic Renewal".

These were domains I did NOT want renew.

I called GoDaddy support, got a sweet gal to "settle me down" and correct the problem, instantly. This was early on a Sunday morn.

However....they do give you a lot of leeway with renewing domains. But, if you ever have a domain expire....which you didn't want to expire, they charge $165 to Re-Instate.

Advantages of using CPanel is that in the US/UK the Linux market for hosting is HUGE. With cpanel, migration from one server to another is easy. You can get a lot of expertise to help you out with cpanel related issues, and since its all encompassing, why bother with anything that is mildly proprietary and where migration would be an issue?

Cpanel add-ons are a great resource! Adding multiple domains on it, and managing them all is a big plus. Other control panels that are competing in this space really is Plesk (by Parallels).

  • godaddy sets up their servers differently than almost all the rest of the hosts in the world.

for instance, you can not run a phpbb bulletin board on their windows package at all.

for straight html webpages they are fine but if you start trying to run any php type scripts you will have all sorts of problems.

linux based servers are always better unless you are going to run some type of asp scripts.

    the internet runs on linux/unix

so stick to what works everywhere and you can't go wrong.

    just a little clarification here;
cpanel is simply software that a host can install for you to manage your hosting account.
it is not part of linux etc.
many linux based hosting accounts do not use it.
there are many other type of managers out there.
having said that, it is known as the easiest to use
    and I agree with that.

    luck,

I use Host Gator. It doesn't matter what you're using on your PC. You can still use it. I definitely prefer cpanel to GoDaddy's panel. I used GoDaddy for a short time, but left because I needed cgi support... and theirs was sketchy at best.

Get Linux at Hostgator. What you use on your computer has nothing to do with what your hosting is.

I have tried just about every host on the internet in the last 11 years and HostGator is the only host that I've never had any problems with.

I host all of my sites there now.

I switched from GoDaddy to Hostgator. It is over a year and I have never contacted support yet. I also have another accounts with liquidweb and ixwebhosting. Liquidweb is expensive than the others, I use their VPS just for my online store. For all other niches blogs, I use Hostgator and ixwebhosting. But I'm going to cancel ixwebhosting when my plan is about to expire.
