...how would you build your IM business?

A close friend of mine is a professional ballet dancer, just graduated and would like to start an online career.

She has all the credentials: Danced in big shows like The Nutcracker and Disney, etc. She taught several classes, and is now considering an online business.

With my limited knowledge, the only ideas I can come up with right now are

1. Having a Youtube presence, perhaps with mini-instructional videos to gain followers
2. Having a regular blog about dancing.
3. Building a list of followers
4. Creating products like ebooks and/or personal coaching sessions

But like I said, I still have a lot of studying to do when it comes to IM.

Hence my first question: How would you build your online business if you were a pro dancer?

Best guess is courses/coaching. That's the angle I'd propose right off the bat.

Obviously, she'd have to be unique and everything ... but, yeah!

Video courses seems like a good idea.

Keep in mind those ballet classes aren't necessarily cheap, plus she would be targeting a pretty specific group: girls to young women.

Seems like a good opportunity in my opinion.

Ask your friend to check out Udemy. I think it's a good way to start out building a customer base that way.

The first thing I would do is put together something offline where it's just a fun event.

Maybe a class for adults, perhaps even kids and adults. I'd put everyone that comes in (minus the kids) on the email list, which will give them free video lesson online that they can do in their living rooms and even one they can do along with their kids.

Make sure to put your face on that opt in page because familiarity goes a long way. It's an extra reminder of why they are there.

Once that transaction (of their email) happens you know this person is pretty serious.

When the video is over, tell them how you're going to send them another video tomorrow and explain what that video is going to be about and let them know that they DO NOT want to miss this awesome - fun packed video.

At the beginning of the second video, what you'll need to do is describe what wonderful reasons there are to learn how to dance... (Physical, emotional and person reasons)

To dance with their significant other?
      To show off?
      To teach others?
To get a good fun workout that they can do alone or with others
      To impress their peers?
      Etc...

At the end of that video, tell them how amazing they are and reiterate why it's so wonderful that they have now incorporated the awesome power of dance into their lives and how you want to be right there to help them completely transform themselves "internally and externally"

So, then you'll ask for a small commitment of a few bucks perhaps $7 - $23 to get them into the door. Make sure your sales funnel is set up properly and that your offers are of EXTREME VALUE (upsells and downsells, $1 trials works well in these cases).

Please keep in mind that, the value you give, trumps everything, believe me. Traffic is the least of your problems and always will be.

(Remember this is all automated so you should still be out in the physical world dancing away)

      I hope this has helped.

      Warm Regards

You are asking about BALLET - which requires years of dedication, muscle memory, etc etc. You say your friend "just graduated" - graduated from what? What ballet company was she associated with? Was she a Disney dancer or in a Disney show? Only the very top dancers in ballet have name recognition in the public - so to establish credentials it comes down to the ballet company you danced with rather than the music you danced to.

The best example of using dance to create a "business online" is perhaps the Fluidity exercise bar and videos. This adapts many dance stretches and strength movements - and the ballet 'barre' - to an exercise program.

The athleticism and discipline of dance translate well to the current public interest in diets and exercise routines...

I'm a non- expert in ballet - I quit lessons at age 12 because it just hurt too much I don't buy exercise equipment - but I have a fluidity barre....because a "dancer's body" is the ultimate physical goal for many women.

          Thank you for your input.

Sorry I wasn't more specific. She just graduated with a Marketing degree. She had already graduated from one of the top performing dance schools in the state, and taught there too. As for Disney, she danced in various shows in the theme parks. She was also featured in many other large productions and workshops.

She's quite top-tier; just trying to figure out how to combine her marketing degree with her skill to create an online presence.

create and promote her skills in facebook groups, facebook groups are new and better blogs.. once you have people in your group, you can take it in lots of directions, easiest monetization of her skills would be a digital course or membership website..

How about affiliate programs for dancewear?

I'm out of my league here, but I do know that dancers are very fashion conscious when it comes to their clothing, and there are "designer" labels specifically created for that market.

Be aggressive and contact sites like this personally to see if your friend can arrange to either 1) affiliate, or 2) run paid ads for them on her site.

Dance Shoes, Dance Clothes, Dancewear, Dance Classes and Dance Camps | Just for Kix

I don't know if these people have an affiliate program, or not... but I have purchased gifts from them (after having been told by my granddaughter what was "cool").

Get in touch with some of the better dance studios to get connected into the child/youth market and their parents. Once you are connected in that community, they can tell you what their market wants or needs and can connect you further into the network. They can also potentially become joint business partners.

I am aware of a gal who graduated with a degree in dance from Eastern North Carolina University. She now has more than 250 students with multiple instructors, does lots of recitals and has a real presence in the community. I am personally into other forms of social dancing and attend competitions. Although not ballet, just getting some connections in the community can get some networking to help get you started and provide ideas. Just a thought.

Just to be clear - I wasn't questioning her skill or training. However, she is in marketing rather than focusing only on dance as a career... That tells me she is practical as well as talented.

She needs a "third leg on the stool" . She has her marketing degree - her ballet skills/training....but she also needs a product, a school, a commerce site or something similar in order to make money.

She could combine offline/online by opening her own dance studio - she could create a line of dance clothing (perhaps for young/teen dancers?) or have a site that features products for dancers as an affiliate.

If dancing is your expertise then create a freebie which you can use to bait in people interested in dancing giving them some tips on how to improve _______ from their follow up with your own paid course teaching them the rest of the steps. YouTube I could image would be perfect to help gain an audience and build a list.
