What to you expect a restuarant website to do for you?

Just making sure I don't leave out anything. What should a restaurant site do for you?


Things I've thought of and included already:

1. Menu
2. Map / Location - linked to Google maps for directions
3. Hours
4. Photo of the place
5. Local related news items relating to the restaurant

I've thought about doing online ordering but they are not ready for that yet.

Anything else you like to see when you look at a restaurant's site?

      I wish restaurants would put of a great picture of happy people on the main page ... you know a nice man or women with white pearly teeth ... and the staff as a group looking like they are having fun r ... food pics is one thing but people eating the food having a great time closes me everytime ...

        Scott as a former (successful) restaurateur I have thought a lot about this in the past as I now see so many restaurant websites that to me "miss the marketing boat".

        Firstly as mentioned above making such a site personal (bios/connections) is the most effective way for independent owners to create an edge over franchised/corporate big boxes. To do this I feel the site would need such things as:

        Email list. You need to get visitors to sign up because once they do, they WILL become a customer sooner or later, so add an incentive - a good one - like 2-for-1 dinner on Mon-Tue (or slow days). Once they are on the list, broadcast emails with images of specials and attached printable coupons. Everyone is looking for a deal these days, so offer it to them.

        Newsletter via email list. This could include recipes, images, client comments, staff profiles and humor. Ask one of the staff members to describe their first day working at the place, their favorite staff meal, their most regular customers, what they want to be when they grow up! etc etc.. Always attach a special or coupon and let your staff know about it.

        Videos. This is an excellent and CHEAP way to get traffic because creativity can be showcased by the owner and their staff. They could get a college kid to video the restaurant in action (even tense moments - like reality TV) and have a video on the landing page - visitors will play it if nothing else and be mesmerized by how creative the business is. When visitors see something like this it eliminates doubt and tells them "These guys really want my business and I trust them." Eliminating consumer doubt is what the big box retailers specialize in - you just know what you are going to get, thats why they are busy. But if you can do that and be individual, all the better.

        Get staff involved. Have in-house contests about getting as many customers to sign up for the email list- add a card and pen to every bill folder for email sign-ups. Once they sign up, you can offer customer incentives to bird-dog for the restaurant (bring them new customers in exchange for free meals, etc.)

        Anyway, I could go on and on about this but I must cut the grass now! Please pass these on to your client, because what happens more often than not is a beautiful looking small business website simply under-performs because of a lack of commitment and direction.

    I would need to see lots of pictures of the inside, the menu with pictures, the chef at work video is a great idea. You should also have directions on how to get their from a well known landmark i.e. the movie theater, or the mall. I can't tell you how often google maps are wrong.

      Good points.. I have had Google maps be wrong several times.

      Another thing I just thought of.. downloadable GPS coordinates for those with a GPS.

    Regarding the photographs of the establishment, there should be some taken inside that show the atmosphere and decor, and at least one taken showing the restaurant from the street area out front. Many people are horrible at map reading, but if they get close they can recognize the sign or building if they've already seen a photo of it online.

    1. coupons
    2. phone number available through my mobile (so might be wise to be mobile ready and bilingual)

    I figure most ppl on the go when they are thinking about food. so a complete menu with pricing, skype compatible so the i can call for a reservation or order from my cell phone without having to remember numbers.

    And depending on the area...bilingual.

      "Photos of the INSIDE"...definitely.

      They've spent lots of money & time on their INTERIORS. If you have something that can SHOW these Interiors to potential Diners...they will LOVE you!

      Some years ago, I created a Book of Menus that was place at the front desk of local hotels/motels.

      I gave each restaurant 2 pages with 3 or 4 Photos on each page, along with their Menus.

      Then, when I heard about "PhotoStory" and "Animoto"....I made Videos of the "Still Photos"...put some music in the background and WHALA...they LOVED it.

      A restaurant site with a Video of their interior should have NO problem in selling.

    How about a virtual tour of inside you can take a video on a digital camera then optimize it to look like a virtual tour

    customer reviews definitely!

    Also newspaper clippings or any other testimonial type - maybe as seen on yahoo dining or any other website that's reputable

    Also whats the finer details - like ambience, type of music, special themes or events that it caters for.

      One of the industries I do copywriting for is specialty foods--so I've been paying attention to what consumers want when buying food.

      There's growing demand for calorie count, nutritional information, and ingredients used. That demand extends to restaurants.

      If your client is willing to accommodate his or her clientele--provided they are part of the growing number of consumers who want this information--the website will score points, in my opinion.

        One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet are any special capabilities - banquet/party room, catering, business meetings, company parties etc.

        Another idea - just an idea, haven't had a chance to test it yet - is prepaid prix fixe meal vouchers, including beverage/wine and gratuity so all the holder has to do is present the cert. Great for special occasions, business lunches, gifts...

        That is excellent advice!

        If not actual calorie accounts, the added information that healthy options are available on the menu would be a nice touch. Maybe even include if there are options for vegetarians.

    When I look up a restaurant I want to see location/map. Menu including prices. Images of the dining room and perhaps pictures of their popular dishes.

    It depends why I'm looking it up, but generally I want to see if they are within my budget and have food that I like and that the dining room is cozy and comfortable... especially if it's a higher priced restaurant.
