How To Buy A Domain Name For The Best Price

I just went searching for the domain "BestLittleWidgets.com (not the real name!) and wee that it is for sale at Premium Domain Names at Discounted Prices | DirectDomains for $788 with a 38% discount which brings it to $488. There's also a tab that says "or make us an offer"

What's the best approach to paying the lowest price for the url?

People with domains know they have to wait for a buyer to contact them, so they price high. Make an extremely low offer without being ignorant and see what happens. Engage them first and wait for the reply.

Make it clear that you have several options you are considering in your optimal price range. That should motivate them to be competitive.

You can hope there's not enough demand so you can scoop it up on the low end...

    OR

you can do a direct buy of 'zombie' sites and buy VERY CHEAP.

You'd be surprised as to how many NICHE-SPECIFIC zombie domains are out there

If you want to purchase a domain name at a very low price, the best advice I can offer is this:

Don't fall in love with "BestLittleWidgets.com" or any other specific name.

Exact match is over-rated (with the possible exception of a product name) so you should be able to find something very close that is not registered yet.

See if there are some synonyms that you can exchange for the word "best" like great, fine, super, perfect, top . . . well you get the point.

If that doesn't work, add on a very short word like "try," "buy," "get," "my," or "purchase" - anything that will change the name just slightly.

Of course, you'll want to see what domains already have been registered that are closely similar so as not to confuse potential prospects.

You can also go to Impossibility or Lean Domain Search and find a good and short dot com for any keyword.

      Good luck to you,

      Steve

Sometimes you can find special GoDaddy deals out there. I think the last time I registered a domain, I paid a dollar. That was good for 12 months.

I'm guessing BuyDomains is the owner. They are known to bargain a little over the phone. Looks like DirectDomains is where they house their junk. The mere fact that it's on that site with all that trash leads me to believe you should be certain of what else is out there before you pay $500 for this one.

Many Thanks for all of your insights

My challenge is that the URL is the exact name of a product I'm creating and while the hyphenated URL is available it seems logical to me that I should own the unhyphenated URL too, hence the reason I've posed the question

Pick a URL that isn't already owned...

If you're creating the product, just create a new name. The only thing that would be of benefit to you in buying a domain that's already been used is in the linkjuice, which has probably been wiped out, if there's any at all. Is it even worth a couiple hundred dollars, when you cold use that money to promote a new site / new name?
