You don't get paid if they don't read your book

Sorry if this has been discussed before, but I've not been around for a while.

I think Amazon started paying authors $1.40 when someone borrowed their book, but now it's changing and you get paid a certain amount depending on how many pages they read.

I'm pretty sure this would affect 40% of my earnings.

Has anyone noticed a big drop in their earnings recently?

Many people have been posting about this. Just do a quick search.

There are several threads of people actually wanting to quit Kindle because of this KU update.

To protect yourself, why don't you write your book as an INTEGRATED READ instead of the normal way which tends to have chapters floating separate from each other or simply flowing from beginning to end?

Personally, I've changed how I organize my books so as to PUSH the reader to read the whole book instead of just dwelling on certain parts. Try using EMOTIONAL TRIGGERS every few paragraphs.

Sounds like it's a bigger issue than I thought it might be.

I'm just guessing, but I think people opening a $2.99 book would be the main concern.

I'll pay attention to all the feedback over the next 6 months.

My way of looking at it is this:

If you just write books because you enjoy writing and have a story/infor/etc to share, you have nothing to worry about, your income is about to go through the roof.

If you are looking to publish something, anything, who cares what it is as long as you can scam people out of their money: RUN - Amazon is coming after you and they are using KU you take you out.

Amazon came out and said there were too many people attempting to scam the system by writing fake books, which Amazon has referred to as "scamlettes" (quick report pamphlets of no real value intended only to scam people)

Between March and May 2015 Amazon was FLOODED with 10 page 'books" all selling for $2.99. When I say flooded, I mean, as in more then 200 of them being published PER HOUR. Tens of thousands of then clogged up the "New Release" pages in a matter of days. Amazon was deleting them and banning the scam artists left and right, but they couldn't manual delete them fast enough to keep up with the amount of new scamlettes that were coming in each hour, thus WHY they announced (a few months ago) that they were working on an emergency change in the KU payouts in order to keep from getting slaughtered by Google's Panda/Penguin two-punch. Google basically told Amazon, get rid of the scam artists or we are delisting you from our index and shutting you down. Thus how last weeks change to the KU payouts came about.

So far I'm loving the new KU. Why? Because, I write REAL books. Books which people ACTUALLY read, and I'm averaging 500+ pages read per day since the new KU dashboard rolled out on July 2, 2015. In other words, my KU income has more then tripled in the past 5 days.

Because I write big beefy (multiple hundred page) how-to guides on things I've actually done and novellas and novels about characters my readers enjoy, my books are now paying me about $50 a books as opposed to the $1.40 borrow or the $2.09 cover royalty.

The moral of this is: have something to share and share it, don't try to respin someone else's work, don't try to scam readers for a fast buck, write because you want to write, write because you enjoy writing, write about things you love and you WILL be rewarded.

I have been self-publishing my books since 1978 and never once I have I ever written a book with the goal of making money at it, and THAT is why I make money at it. When you focus too hard on making money, you don't put enough joy for the love of your topic into your work and readers will see through it, and now, so will Amazon. Amazon wants real books for real readers in their real database. They got hit hard by scammers the past few months and they took action. The only people who are going to see a downside of the new KU are the people who ran to Kindle for the soul purpose of trying to use Kindle as a cash cow. People who are writing for the love of writing are not being effected by this at all.

So your implying that since short story authors like myself write shorter works that our books are not "real books"? So we all should be punished because of the scamlette's? KU 2.0 is a flawed system and now the way I make money is affected by it. Amazon has created a rift between short story authors and long writers with each one blaming the other for the loss of income while amazon sits back rakes in more cash. I'm glad you have the means to write just for the love of writing but for some of us this is a business and our livelihood.

And when you consider his/her website promotes writing and publishing a multitude of 5,000-word "books" to Amazon, the entire post doesn't make any sense! 5,000-word "books" amount to about 8 pages.

No sense at all, maybe it's a full moon or they just live in an alternate reality.

I understand everything Eelkat is saying except the part where now he makes $50 for KU borrow.
So you have 10,000 page book that people read all the way through? Payout is estimated at half a cent per KENP right?
