How can I market my site using Twitter?

I just got started using Twitter and I really love it, however, I was wondering if anyone here could tell me exactly how do I market my site using this technology?

Simply post when you include interesting articles from your site onto twitter. Just don't spam the heck out of your followers, or only your mom and girlfriend will follow you!

    What Frank said.

Social media is about being social, not about selling

I wrote up an article on how to tweet without looking like a spammer you can read it here:

10 Step Guide to Spam Free Tweets

I personally advocate sending out about 20 normal, helpful and informative tweets to one blog posting back to my site...

Just be social and natural.. .kinda like attending a friends BBQ - you might get to mention what you do and the latest listing/product, on the other hand, you might not get to sell, but you get to build a relationship with someone for next time.

That's some good info, there. I'll be sharing that with some other people who keep asking me about twitter marketing, too.
      Thanks for that, Matt.

What ever you do, do not use auto follow software and blast your products every 5 minutes on twitter with software. I don't care if it helps make money. Its tacky.

We have a free guide you can get here - www.hottwitterspy.com

There are lots of methods. But essentially use Twitter.com to connect to people who match the profile of your customers. And communicate offers, ask them opinions on stuff on your site. Give something to them for signing up etc.

I would recommend that you socially bookmark your site at places like Digg, StumbleUpon, and delicious, especially if your site is a blog. If it IS a blog, I would also recommend that you bookmark/tweet about individual posts instead of the site as a whole.

You can tweet the links to your bookmarked material to help generate even more buzz about your website through getting more Diggs, views, etc.

I agree, Twitter is first and foremost about being social - it's about people. I like to use the analogy: think of Twitter as a big dinner party - you wouldn't stand up on the table in the middle of a party and start shouting out your sales pitch to every stranger in the room. If you did, you could expect to not get a favorable response. Same is true on Twitter.

While you can technically blast out your sales pitches, ads and promos all you want (there aren't any 'Twitter Police'), however, there is a social etiquette that most follow and it's usually better to get to know those who have chosen to follow you by chatting with them, get to know them a bit, before you send out promos, especially on a new Twitter account.

Like kettlewell posted, send out 20 (or so) non-promo tweets to every promo tweet. I like to mix up my tweets with personal, helpful, informative and promo.

Neville, what do you have on your site? What are you promoting? If you are marketing your article writing services, on some of your tweets, just mention that you are an article writer. Seriously. Say "I've got room in my schedule for article writing, DM or email me if interested", or "If you'd like to check out samples of my article writing, they're available at (your link here); hope to hear from you!"

That's what I did when I first got started on Twitter and it worked very well. I get the VAST majority of my writing clients from Twitter.

Also make sure that you have a good high quality site to send people to, and make sure that you have your writing samples on there, along with some testimonials from satisfied customers, and a "contact me" page.

It's also nice to give tips on Twitter. Things people will find useful. I agree with everyone above me, its a social site, first and foremost. But don't be afraid to market yourself a little bit, just don't over do it.

If you throw in some advice on your niche it will get people reading and responding. Also, start conversations! Reply to what people are saying. Make it your own virtual water cooler. If you stir up some conversations it will increase the flow and traffic to your site.

Try not to use the default theme on twitter either. Get a custom made background. A quick google search will prove tons of ways to help you out here.

There is a good marketer, Chris Ramsey, who has written a few posts about Twitter and businesses. Here are some good tips from him here.

    Hope this helps!
