All three of your examples are tech companies with a lot of employees. Two have a couple dozen or more. The third over 100. Not sure what their profits are like. Perhaps there is no profit and they are running on VC funding. But even if they are "INSANELY profitable" it's a moot point in the context of the type of discussion you are probably trying to start in this thread since I doubt anyone here is going to go out and get 20, 50, 100 employees to make the project "INSANELY profitable."

Actually, according to Vipechill, ViralNova started on a shoestring with one person running it when it was hot. Again, reference the articles I posted above. Excellent reads.

    I would say they are.

Just look at their Alexa Rankings and that will show you if these type of sites are popular or not. And usually they are. That means they get a lot of daily traffic. And that results in a lot of clicks!

When blog posts go viral in the social networks, they get a lot of traffic. And what tends to go viral online? ... VERY interesting and weird news from around the world.

The key for a post to viral, though, is a lot of targeted traffic. You can't just publish these type of posts and expect them to go viral on their own!

You must market the heck out of them and then watch them go viral!

As long as you are doing it with arbitrage model, yes they are still super popular, if you get clicks from ads at 30 cents and if you are averaging slightly higher EPC, then you would do it all day long, right?

My post is only from brief personal experience:

-I started a so-called "viral blog" a few months ago.
-I promoted many posts on places like Reddit and StumbleUpon.
-My effort was very half-assed, only publishing when i felt like it, and promoting when i felt like it.
-Despite this laziness, my AdSense earnings often saw $10 to $17 on a good day.
-I ultimately stopped this project because im not entirely passionate and dont give a crap.

Taking the above into consideration, I'd say that viral blogs are very profitable, considering it's relatively easy to put in twice as much effort/content.

    Hope that helps.

Yes if you track properly, break a single post into multiple pages and design to go viral they do make money and quite quickly, but you need to spend a bit on traffic to accelerate the process.

It is all about arbitrage, average impressions per user and settint up your site right. I explain the process here 3 Simple Steps to Make Money From Native Ad Trashy Arbitrage Sites — Native Ad Buzz

It's really lame that those crappy sites OP mentioned can get so viral. They are total BS.

I created and currently run quite a few of these viral sites, and yes they are profitable. BUT.. it's getting more difficult to earn everyday due to Facebook algo changes, the days of easy money, 5-figure months and consistant viral traffic are dwindling.

However many viral type sites are doing extremely well at the moment while the half-assed sites die off, such as LittleThings.com - Life's about the Little Things. and LifeBuzz.
