Best ways to prevent / remove malware from Wordpress sites

What's up with the malware these days? Used to never be a problem.

Comment spam was never a thing, now it's registration spam. CleanTalk seems to be working on the site I used it for.

Any other solutions to prevent or remove malware from an infected site?

3 of my sites are down; it must have gotten into the hosting. I use Dreamhost.

Some say WPEngine rocks but I don't believe more than $30/month should be necessary in 2015 for several sites with under 1,000 visitors/month each.

What options am I not aware of?
