How do I track conversions from a small company's webpage?

I have come across an opportunity to market for a family owned business, which is a small online school that teaches a certain niche. The school is doing well and they are willing to pay me $1,000 per sale. They do no advertising of any kind and only rely on SEO to sell their course.

I am not sure if I will be promoting for Adwords, a squeeze page with email opt in, social media marketing, something else I haven't thought of yet, or a combination of all of the above. They even have a really well done E-book I can use.

My main question is about tracking. How would I go about proving that a signup came from me? The price of the course is about $3,500 and signups are split about 70/30 versus over the phone (after researching on the site) and signing up directly on the site. Would I have them install some code on their site, and if so, where do I get that code? I am worried that I will not be paid for the phone signups as they won't know they came from me. If it helps, I trust the company and have no worries about not getting paid when they know the sale came from me.

What would you do if you were in my shoes? Any help is appreciated!

I forgot to mention, and perhaps this has no bearing, but the target market is Canadians and their website only ranks well on Google.ca

I have a couple of concerns regarding this

You need to agree a marketing strategy with them, where do they want their business to be seen, how do they want it to be presented and of course what is their budget and attitude towards paid promotions, like AdWords.

You mention that you are not sure who their web developer is, thus who will have control of adding the promotional and tracking coding to their existing sites. Do you have to deal with their existing web manager or are they doing it themselves, if it's the latter then you could offer this web management as an extra service.

With regards to tracking you could use Google Analytics. Every promotional link can have tracking campaign parameters added to the end of it such that you know exactly which promotion this person arrived from. They also provide the tracking code that needs to be added to track the sites visitors and what they do on the site.

Thanks for the quick response. They would have zero care of where I promote (within reason, they don't want me to be spammy). They have no budget, it would be my $$$ I would be spending on promoting. I definitely will be sitting with them next week as I am jotting down any question I can think of to cover of how to proceed, payout, returns, etc.

I would be dealing with their web manager directly. They are in the process of completely redesigning their website as it is absolutely archaic looking. I have zero web management experience and honestly no passion for it whatsoever.

Does analytics track IP addresses? I would have access to their analytics account as well as set up one of mine. Maybe once a month compare analytic accounts and if the IP address matches I get paid? I don't know how to do it more sophisticated than that.

I use Improvely to track conversions ($30 per month). It would require them to install a code on their site. But, you would have to sell at a different price point than the company does.

Which brings me to my next point. I would have them give you a unique code that customers can use to get a discount and sign up. Say $100 off. You take $900 per sale.

The customer will use the code you gave them if they call because they'll get a discount. They'll also use it on the site, and you'd be able to track it.

Gambino has the right idea. You need a form of return tracking on the sale confirmation page for the online purchases and for phone orders you need to know how those orders are processed. If the sales associate processes the phone order through the existing website, or a back end version of that, then there should be a way to have an offer code track back to you. Otherwise you are left with "the honor system" and hoping they pay you as they should. I am not familiar with improvely track specifically, but there are plenty of pixel tracking options available, just look into them and see what best meets your needs.

        Thank you.

I was thinking this as an option as well. However, I was hoping it wouldn't lead to something that takes 10% of my sale away (potentially 20% of my margin or more) I wonder if a lower amount would work, or perhaps a tangible object? A free headset wich they need) when you mention it?

The other issue with that is if the company creates an item line on the sales form for a promo code, the customers are going to search Google for that promo code and stumble across my site and I'll be getting paid for orders I may have had nothing to do with.

        Thanks!
It's all done on the back end but I have complete access to it.
I will research pixel tracking as I have begun to hear that term come up often.
