How many keywords should I focus on?

I have half a dozen keywords that combined give me perhaps 100,000 exact match searches per month on google. I have been recommended to optimise my web pages for just one word, three at most. I am writing articles using the six keyword phrases that I have chosen, and my main keyword is 2 to 2.5 density in my sales letter of my web site. But should I be putting all six of my keywords in my web site at 2.5% density?

Does this mean because I have six main keywords I should always stick to them and not ever use other keywords in my marketing? There are plenty of other keywords that also have good search volumes. I just don't understand how marketing using other keywords affects the grand scheme of things.

When I build back links, must I use the exact keyword phrases (the six I have chosen), or can I use other related keywords? What effect will that have? Exactly HOW important is it to know without a doubt your five or six best keywords and stick to them all the time??

If you're getting good keyword search volume with the keywords you're using now I would not change anything.

I'm not getting that traffic at all. That is what google says are searching for my terms. I would be very happy with 100,000 exact match searches per month and would be quitting my j o b...

Is it a sales letter or a content site?

Putting content out there with other keywords that are relevant to your niche will never hurt. A good variety of anchor text and content will likely make your website rank for keywords that you never even planned for.

Your going to get 2 different answers here.

    1. Always use the same anchor text because it doesn't matter
    2. Use a variation of your keywords so you don't leave a foot-print.

Personally, I try to mix them up with variations yet always have the keyword that I'm targeting in the anchor text. As an example, if I'm targeting the keyword Make money online, I might use:

    Make money online
    how to make money online
    ways to make money online
    Want to make money online?

And other variations as I come up with them. Ultimately though when you are referring to SEO, the best plan is to be consistent.

The ones I am more concerned about are sales letters. I also have a content blog pointing people to my ebook sites but I am not concerned about optimising them

Did you just get the smack down from Google?

The only reason I ask is because of your focus on driving the traffic to the landing page....Good luck with that if the terms are moderately competitive.

You need to set up a traffic funnel if you are trying to replace the adwords traffic...

The smack down? well, yes google just suspended my google adwords account, if that's what you mean.
Yes, my focus is on driving traffic to my landing page to build my list. I am not relying solely on adwords (come to think of it I guess I don't have a choice right now). I do article marketing, video submission, autoresponder marketing, blogging, so I believe I am working on those things.
I just know that I need to pay more attention to the basic SEO and make sure I have keywords right (ie. in the right places).
As for keywords, I have not picked the most competetive words. My keywords have low search volumes as far as exact match are concerned.

I've shied away from keyword density... it is only one piece to the keyword puzzle.

I've found that related words, terms and phrases seems to be getting me extra traffic, both in terms of rankings for the targeted keywords, but the related terms as well.

so if I was trying to sell a car, I'd make sure that Ford, Dodge, Chevy, Honda, etc were all in there too... seems that Google has figured out that Ford is an automobile, and a car is a type of automobile...

I've seen way too many sites that rank well with KW density near zero to believe that it's a major factor any more.

KW density is virtually unimportant, imho. Obviously you still have to include your KW in the title, meta tags don't hurt but probably don't help much, and in the body of your content. Waste of your time to try to shoot for a certain density, though. Use it naturally, use variations naturally, don't sweat anything else in terms of on-page SEO.

Backlinks are the key. I use the exact same anchor text every time, but I am not about to suggest it is the ONLY way. I just haven't ever seen a downside (personally in my business) to sticking with the same anchor text every single time I get a backlink.
