I am looking for some video ideas for my tech blog. So what do you want to be able to do but couldn't figure it out?

Working from your computer may be a good video to make. Also, how to build your own computer would be quite interesting.

I want to know how to set up my laptop so I can run multiple versions of Internet Explorer. That would be better than kicking the kids off my old desktop when I need to test a site in IE6!

How to backup your settings (like your desktop, any drivers and such) from an old computer to a fresh, reformatted hard drive. Sometimes new drivers don't work with other versions of Windows and it is a royal PITA to try and hunt down the original CDs.

LOL - that really cracked me up!!!

OK I really do have a couple of suggestions here. This is all PC-related. I don't mac. Yet. :p

Number one for me is I would like to be able to take some of my old audio cassettes and digitalize them on the computer & have never been sure how to do that. Which hardware, software required? Also old analog camcorder cassettes as well.

I would also love to be able to set up audible timed reminders on my computer, that I could record with my own voice, to remind me to make that call, take that break, or say 'good morning don't forget next saturday is your niece's birthday, she is 13 by the way', or how about 'wake up for crying out loud it's 4 in the morning and you're nodding off in your swivel chair & you're going to get a stiff neck!'

As far as more basic computer stuff goes, I would like to know more about:

      * how to detect which programs are unnecessarily running behind the scenes and slowing the computer down
      * all about voice recognition software pros/cons, ins/outs, which one is best etc.
      * how to optimize google earth so that it runs smoothly. The early versions were a thing of beauty in terms of movement and navigation, but it seems every new version that comes out runs more slowly and jerkily than the one before.
      * how to get videos consistently to play smoothly - sometimes you tube videos will just play jerkily , at other times just peachy, and it doesn't seem to matter how many other programs I have running. Rebooting ususally helps but is there a simpler way??
      * gadzooks, you've really got me started now... lemme outta here I gotta get some real work done....

Hope this helps in some microscopic way...

I could do all that in a jiffy.

Matt, you're lucky I'm sick of that kind of stuff after working on computers for years, or you'd have some competition right now.

I'd like to know how to hit my computer with a sledge hammer and not break it.

I've attempted to perfect this technique 4 different times. All 4 times the impact of the hammer caused irreparable damage. Damage that I didn't anticipate or want. I was only trying to get my computer to understand that what it was doing at the time was really frustrating. I just wanted it to stop doing what it wanted to do and do what I wanted it to do not stop working.

Of course, the fact that it was unwilling to gracefully accept my constructive criticism increased my frustration. So applying the head of the hammer to the computer again seemed to be a good idea. This turned out to be kinda like beating a dead horse. It did not appear to learn anything from the 1st blow so administering the 2nd was probably redundant. But doing so did give me a warm and fuzzy feeling.

Now that I think about it that warm and fuzzy might be misconstrued as a bad thing. So I take that sentence back. Please replace it with "Reprimanding the computer hurt me more than the reprimand hurt it".

Anyway, I guess what I would really like to learn is how to train my computer to do exactly what I want it to do, when I want it to do it. I hate it when it chooses to do its own thing. After all, I did pay good money for the damned thing. (5 times!)

    A True Pacifist,
    Gene

P.S. If you are not familiar with the proper technique to smack your computer without breaking it. How about showing us how to set up an auto-defrag when we save to the hard drive. I know that there are some paid software available to do this, but can it be done with my existing OS? Windows XP SP2 BTW.

How about a way to either move all installed programs (with installation info intact) to a new computer, while leaving behind any broken registry stuff (or back up the info and re-install it to my old computer after I do a Windows re-install).

I know there are a couple of programs available (PCMover is something like $500+ for one-time use), but that seems excessive for a non-corporate user (me).

Another thing it'd be nice to know is how to get .MSI files to start back working. Last couple of programs I downloaded have .msi installers, which won't run (such installers used to work on this computer). Instead they give an error message. I checked that the .msi file extension is associated with msiexec.exe, and that the exe file is present and has the right arguments in the command line. All present and accounted for. But it won't install anyway.

Or is this more advanced than you're thinking?

Cheers from warm and smiling Thailand,
    Charles
