Questions for Amazon Store Owners/Affiliates

I've started building an Amazon store (my first one) and I think it's a great niche with lots of potential. Luckily I'm a web designer by trade so I don't have to outsource this part of it. I'm using WooCommerce and Prosociate to import hand-picked items, which range in price ($10-$500).

So far, I have approximately 200 products on my site and they are all categorized appropriately. By using Prosociate, it imports images, product titles and descriptions. I've been going through the products one-by-one, to edit the titles (some are just way too long). However, for the time being, I'm going to leave the descriptions as they are.

Here's one of my questions: can you get banned from Amazon Associates for using their descriptions? I've been getting conflicting information on this.

At this point, I'm not concerned about SEO (I will outsource the descriptions at a later date). I don't want to waste time or money on this right now before I see results. My marketing plan to drive traffic to my Amazon store is as follows:

1. Banner Ads from BuySellAds.com (PAID)
2. Facebook Ads (PAID)
3. Email Marketing (once I start building my list)
4. Facebook Marketing (once I start building my Facebook page)
5. Twitter Marketing (once I have my Twitter account set up)
6. Pinterest Marketing (when it's set up)

My theory is that if I see results from paid advertising (banners and facebook ads), then I'll worry about SEO.

Is this a common-sense approach?

    If your web page has the same content as an Amazon page your chances of ranking higher than Amazon are slim. If you were a search engine with two pages of identical content: one from one of the most authoritative and respected websites on the planet, and the second from you, which do you think would rank higher?

    I agree with those who say there is no direct penalty for duplicate content. Google may not directly penalize a site for having duplicate content, BUT the issue is when having multiple pages in its index with the same content, which one does Google choose to show? You can bet it won't be a page from your brand new website!

    Google has said it essentially takes all the pages with the same content and puts them in a group. From the group Google then decides which one, or ones, to show. Will it be yours? I seriously doubt it.

    That said, if you have no plans to depend upon Google for traffic, copying Amazon's content won't matter in the least, other than the reader's perception of you and your ability to review / recommend the products you are promoting.
