How Much to Pay Authors Per Article?

I am currently running a bitcoin news and economic analysis. We have about 5 people in total writing for us, with myself doing the bulk of the work.

Previously, I have been paying the writers ~$25 per post that they contribute. This seems like a reasonable market rate to me, yet I cannot help but feel the writers are not interested in contributing at this amount. The articles they write are nothing ground breaking, and they are usually 500 - 800 words. I also provide them on-page links to their own work.

What is an acceptable market rate for articles which are news based or, alternatively, economic analysis based? I do not want to overpay for article but would very much like to have a steady flow of high quality articles.

Perhaps this rate is acceptable and I should simply look for more, and better, writers?

Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

It's really hard to say. Typical pricing varies depending on the country the writer comes from, the quality of their work, and other factors. High quality content, like professional-grade stuff, written by writers from English speaking countries can fetch as much as $50 to $100 per article.

If the content is just average, only 500-800 words, and you're offering a byline of sorts I'd probably say your current rate is acceptable. That isn't a lengthy piece and if doesn't read like a professionally written article, you certainly don't want to pay too much for it.

I'm sure others will weigh in, but ultimately it comes down to whether or not you're happy with the quality and pricing on your end. If you think the writers deserve a pay bump and it doesn't affect your bottom line, by all means, give them a raise. If not, just find more motivated writers.

Question: Have you let your current writers know how you feel about their output?

Why do you say that? Are they not meeting their quota? Try not to judge their output by your own if you are an owner of the business - you don't have the same 'skin in the game'.

What is a "steady flow" - do you have a number of articles you require weekly from each writer?

I know from experience it can be difficult to write multiple articles on the same subject day after day - there are limitations to the subject matter and only so much information/fact. Thus, it comes down to writers with the ability to present the same or similar information in a different manner as much as possible. As you do much of the writing yourself - you know what I mean.

On two clients I wrote for long term - I had to limit the number of articles I could do for those clients because of the difficulty of writing on one (or, in this case, two)specific topics over and over again. I couldn't write more than XX articles per week on each topic or the quality suffered.

The price is reasonable for the subject matter and you must agree if you are paying it. The logical step to me would be approach the writers with your concerns first - and, if necessary, add more writers to your "stable".

Maybe you should checkout iWriters.com. You could get better content there cheaper.

Haven't used them though but you can check them out still.

I have used iWriters. The problem I have with iWriters is that -- yes you can choose the level of writer you would like to have do your article ... and pay for that level writer, but if you don't get a writer at that level interested in doing your work within a certain (short) period of time, the job is opened up for lower quality writers -- and you've already paid the higher price for the better quality writer.
yes, you have the option of rejecting the work from the lesser quality writer, but then you've lost all that time waiting for the job to get done -- twice or more.
So if time is not a factor ... or you don't mind paying for higher quality work and maybe not getting it........... Up to you.

      Hope this helps.

Since you need fairly high level economic analysis, I would take a different tack.

Forget about using forums, content mills, and other typical sources of online content services.

Instead, you may want to reach out to MBA students at LinkedIn groups who write this stuff in their sleep.

You have to understand that in this TOUGH JOB MARKET, many MBAs are having a hard time getting employed. They need a track record.

By offering to publish their exclusive materials in exchange for a nice academic "about the author" section, you'd be surprised as to how many takers you'll get.

I would NOT target upper tier MBA programs though.

You'll get more takers from lower end MBA programs. Those are the MBA candidates that tend to struggle in this current economy.

You can also try other social media platforms which enable you to search user bios quickly and efficiently.

Think outside the box and you'll be rewarded!

For a native, English-speaker that produces quality content, I'd say that $25 - $40 per post is fair, given the length you mentioned. You should talk to your writers about your concerns, though.

The writers who write for Aweber blog, Hubspot blog, or even Wordstream i would pay $25 for. But i write my own content, so this is an expense that i don't need in my business.

A fairly good author should charge $15 per 500 words. Especially if they write it how YOU speak, and your readers believe that you were the one who actually wrote it.

Much depends on quality. Lower quality = lower price , higher quality= higher price

So far usually we pay 1-5 $ per 100 words.
