If you had a visitor captively waiting for 30 seconds...

How would you make money off them?

My site offers a free service. They sign up for my list and then have access to a free report. While my site is "working to retrieve the data", they patiently wait. People have proven that the wait is worth it.

Now, in that 30 seconds, what can I do? I have tried some niche-specific affiliate offers, but I think people are hesitant to click because they are there for one thing.

Are there any services that allow you to host videos for a pay-per-view type arrangement?

If you could provide the type of services you provide that might help. but for that 30second you can create a page that says while waiting check out these other offers that can help you ........I think with time regular customers will start checking it and that might bring in some commissions. Customers need to see something more than one time before they start clicking around.Hope that helps

I've been using this route up until now, but I have yet to see a conversion. This is what got me curious about displaying videos or some other kind of content that pays out well just based on impressions.

When someone signs up for your free report you can direct them to an offer page or a quick video to offer them something at a reduced rate "one time only". If they do not purchase you could always offer the opportunity again in your next autoresponder message. The video could also decrease your bounce rate when they can't wait for the report.

I do have the intention to sell through my autoresponder. I am just trying to capitalize on this opportunity on the wait page.
I like your idea of having a quick demonstrative video that can highlight the benefits of an affiliate offer. Might be more effective than displaying their banner ad.

Yeah, putting a link to somewhere else during the wait creates a cognitive dissonance...which I think you're already understanding.

I presume you have a back end offer behind the freebie.

How about showing them some reasons to get that, preselling the idea to them?

"While we're gathering the relevant data for you, consider these five reasons why XYZ."

I wouldn't hard sell here, just give them the teaser of what they should be thinking about while they're reading the report. Contextual stuff, maybe even points they will see again in the report (not all of them, but a couple--people love to be "in on the story".)

I agree with the above. If I click on a page to get a free report, the last thing I want to see is a ... "while you're waiting let me sell you something" ad.

That's why I hate entry pop-up ads. You want me to buy/sign-up for something before you've established value (big risk). That alone is enough to make many people click away in a huff. Trust me.

But if you insist on doing it anyway, your ad better kick-a$$ - or you're dead to a lot of prospects who might have given you a chance. Forget about them ever returning or doing business with you again.

You should seriously consider the above statement. In an A.D.D infested world where everyone's in an impatient rush, making people wait 30 seconds for anything (even a free product) would give me one of 3 first impressions.

      1. You can't afford to update your site, software or hardware. Cheapo!
      2. You're playing games, because I'm smart enough to know it doesn't take that long to "retrieve data" (wink, wink) when I'm downloading a simple report.
      3. I don't know you from "Jack Sprat" and You're trying to get me to buy something when you haven't established value yet. I need a little foreplay first, like any self-respecting person.

All the above would draw a Big Fat Zero with most people, especially if they're marketers like you.

I'd save the pitch until the end, when you've shown "you know your stuff" and could probably help solve their problem. Because you did it so well with your "free report". Imagine what you give in a paid ____________
That's what they should be thinking at the end (arousal point), then you hit em with a soft-sell pitch- they can't refuse or would feel weird passing up.

That was the 1.0 version of my site. I collected one conversion. People saw survey or free trial and ran.

I decided that building a list was probably more productive in the long run, so i scrapped the CPA and started doing the sign up for the mailing list. I'm now closing in on 600 subscribers in just three weeks. Pretty exciting.

I would suggest during that wait period tell them about you. Tell them how you can help them. This way you'd be building trust and relationship. And you can always do the selling in your autoresponder.

Provide value, help people and money will cone to you.

30 seconds is honestly a long time for the page to load, or "working to retrieve the data".

Even at the movie theaters, when they show the previews before the main movie starts, it takes less than 30 seconds for the next movie preview to show.

After they sign up for your free report, just give them the report, and market to them via email. Don't play with peoples' time like that. They value that more than their money.
