Try adding an adjective to the beginning (i.e. interesting, cool, new, etc) or using a thesaurus to find new words for meet (i.e. encounter, engage, etc)

Positives and negatives to each, but with a little work there are good compromises available.

You could also try tools like impossibility.org, leandomainsearch.com and bustaname.com

Yes, definitely stay with dot com. There are lots of great domains available - you just have to get a little creative and you will find a good one. Don't settle for anything less.

Try using the sites that Jack Gordon mentioned (above) using the keyword phrase "meetpeople." Also, check your favorite keyword tools to see what the #1 keyword phrase is that people search on in your niche. It may be totally different than "meet people" but it will be what your audience will use to find your site.

Very cool idea! I'd recommend using ExpiredDomains.net and searching:

Includes: People
Extension: .com
Max: 12 Characters
No: Hyphens, Numbers
Expired Within: 7 Days

Do that for about a week and you'll definitely find something. Don't forget to google the domain, run it in archive.org and check for USPTO conflicts before registering.

Don't get yourself stuck in the paralysis of analysis.

The internet is becoming more and more congested every second.
Often it is not an easy task to get the desired domain name.

Just pick up any domain or sum up money and buy some premium domain.
It will not necessarily be cheap, but at least you will get something that you want.

Try to keep the domain simple
Without u, 2, 4, and any -'s
Have it explain exactly what the site does in as few words as possible
Use instantdomainsearch.com

That's what we did, and grabbed ourselves an expired 11 year old domain name for $10 SignUpFirst.com. Take your time, we also spent about 3 weeks on just our domain name, looking into social media usernames as well. remember once you build your brand you may kick yourself if you have to rebrand, this is one of the most common mistakes new websites and startups have, even thefacebook.com had to change their name.

Choosing a domain name can be such a stressful thing to do, but at the same time it is exciting too with the anticipation of your new "baby" (website/business). While you absolutely should take the time you need to really do the research, don't let it become that black hole that sucks you in and keeps you paralyzed from taking action and making a decision.

You had asked for help, you got a whole bunch of suggestions, and you did nothing.

Member uwais made a suggestion on the 14th for WeMeetPeople.com. It meets your stated needs exactly, it's a dot-com, there's no odd spelling, others liked it, even you liked it. But instead of registering it immediately, (whether or not you eventually were going to use it), you said you would "research more".

Domains are cheap enough that when you see something good and available, you simply grab it first and think about it later. Have I grabbed a few that I never developed further? Sure! Have I regretted doing so? Of course not! Nine bucks is so stupidly cheap that there's almost zero argument for not taking this approach.

So: WeMeetPeople.com was available for $9 on the 14th. Incredibly, on the 15th, it was still available for $9. On the 16th, it was available for $9. You get the idea.

Today is now the 20th. WeMeetPeople.com is no longer available for $9, because I just registered it. I didn't do this to be mean, or even to make a profit, (although I certainly could). I registered it simply to make the above point. Analysis paralysis gets you nowhere in life. Take Action!!

If you still want the domain, it is now available for $109, and I will give the other $100 to the charity of your choice.

Easy answer. Because IM is loaded with people who are great at talking, and piss-poor at taking action.

I think I'll just go ahead and register the domain to teach the OP a lesson for next time. The OP can buy it from the registrar for $10, or from me for $110. lol
