single domain multiple-affiliate products question

As I'm learning the whole shebang (keyword research, improving my web design skills, etc) I have vaguely planned the following, but I'm not sure if it's the best way to start tinkering. Any comments or opinions are most welcome.

I have my domain name, it's very generic. Say, e-stuff.com or something. I'm going to start by using Clickbank/Amazon as my products, focus on long tail keywords to hone certain pages on my site for. So let's say stuff related to toning in the general exercise niche, long tail keyword example is "toning leg exercises".

I plan to build subdomains of this site into e.g. toning.e-stuff.com and have an article about this topic, with a section at the bottom akin to "hey if you like that info, check out this product"... which are hoplinks to the affiliate sales letter. And another page on that subdomain for my second long tail keyword for the same product. And so on.

For each product that I am tinkering with (probably only two or three right now) I would have seperate subdomains..

I suppose what I'm really asking is how to use my own, general domain name to start out in IM on affiliate marketing, and if that's a good idea. I.e. the StRUCTURE of the site that works best if using a single domain for multiple affiliate products. Tips, tricks, warnings ("oh no! i did it like that and it was the worst idea ever! hehe" ) would be welcome.
