Interesting Ted Talk Presentation on Start-Ups

Just sharing -- Last night I watched (Roku) a Ted Talk presentation by the founder of the very successful IdeaLab, Bill Gross. As IdeaLab incubates and brings to life start-ups, he did a study of why some failed and others succeeded. He used only IdeaLab start-ups in the study.

The #1 Reason that start-ups succeeded was, interestingly enough: Timing. Being in the market at the right time with the right product/service.

Money and plans were the lowest items on the list as reasons behind failure.

So...the study shows why IdeaLab startups succeed or fail. That doesn't discount the study or what he has to say too much. But setting up a study that insular won't always provide the best information for everyone else.

"Timing" makes sense to me. Products that appear in time to fill a need that has been growing - often do well.

To keep going, you need planning and good money management - but being first with an idea is what most of the big names have done.

We've seen countless posts on this forum saying "I want to build "the next Fiverr"....too late. With very few exceptions, the product that is first to the market and serves the market well...will be the successful business.

True - the study was for a certain parameter of business model - but I'm not surprised at the result. You either lead the market or you provide a product better than or cheaper than or easier than what is currently available.

I'm sure there are some useful gems in whatever Gross had to say but you also need to look at the track record of IdeaLabs.

They were at their heyday during the FIRST Dot Com Boom... We're now in the FOURTH Dot Com Boom (the mobile app/Cloud app age).

    Lots of things have changed.

    Filter the advice accordingly.

OK Folks -- sorry I posted. I have an affinity for observing and taking note of the thinking of successful people over unsuccessful people. While I do not deitize people, evidence of success is a signal of being on the right path. But I see that others here disagree and rather than seeing how this might be applicable in their world, prefer instead to immediately see the faults and cracks. OK. Message received. later...
