Newbies - Where You Should Start

I wanted to start this thread because I keep seeing the same questions from newbies, wondering where to start making money online, being dazed and confused.

Here's what you need to know:
1. You will most likely not make a lot of money in a few weeks, or possibly a few months. Yes, there are a few exceptions, but that is not the way it works. Internet marketing is like starting any other business from scratch. It takes time to mature and develop, but once that happens, it can snowball quickly.

2. That being said, IM takes a lot less time than traditional businesses and also takes a lot less money. But usually, it will take some money, but like I said, wayyyyy less than other traditional businesses. If you have the time, you can work day and night, and still won't produce the results that you would if you could invest some money.

3. The best way to make money, IMO is to find a niche, find a need to fill within that niche, construct an offer to sell, whether it's an affiliate product, or your own, build a website and sales page to sell that offer (this could be a blog or not), drive customers to that website and sales page, people buy, add customers to your list, keep emailing them and selling to them over and over again. Keep driving new customers, keep building your customer list.

That's really it. That's all you need to do.

I know others do make money in a variety of other ways - selling Kindle ebooks, CPA offers, website design, offering services, etc. etc. BUT, the true business model, the one that can sustain a real business for years, and make you a lot of money, is the one I mentioned above.

This model is followed by all successful businesses, whether online or not. Every business sells products to fill a need, then they develop a list of customers to sell over and over again - every single one. Think about all the businesses out there, and how they do that. They all do it. You should too!

Don't get stuck in the circle of one make money online method after another.
Don't do it.

Take that business model above and research all you can about how to do that. Buy courses, search this and other forums, etc. etc. There are many ways to implement that business model, and you'll need to find the one that's best for you. Don't get sidetracked by other things.

That, IMO is what I would do if I were still a newbie. Trust me, I've tried almost every way to make money online there is, and in the end, it all comes down to this.

I hope this post was informative, and by all means, starting a thread on the topic would be a great way to help newbies.

    Here's how I find a niche

    Objective:
Find the right niche for a money-making authority site

    Step 1:
Off the top of your head, write down ALL the topics you're passionate about.

How do you know if you're passionate about a topic? Well, you'll talk about it even if you weren't getting paid!

    Step 2:
Go to Google Keyword Planner and find keywords related to these topics.

    Step 3:
Using Google Keyword Planner, find the CPC (cost per click) amounts for the keywords related to your topics.

    Step 4:
Delete keyword groups/topics that pay very little

    Step 5:
Using Google Keyword Planner, find estimated monthly search volumes for the remaining keyword groups/topics.

    Step 6:

Delete keyword groups/topics that get very few searches

As a rule of thumb, low traffic means less than 1000 per month for the whole group. Example: kws 1, 2, and 3 are in the same group. Put together, kws 1, 2, and 3 get only 300 searches a month. Delete this group!

    Step 7:

Load your topic keywords into Google's main search box

    Step 8:

Delete keyword groups/topics that have too many competing pages targeting the same keywords.

    Step 9:

If you run out of topics/keywords, repeat steps 1 to 8 until you get at least 3 topic keyword groups

    Deliverable:

I need you to create a report for the 3 topic/keyword groups the process above produced.

The report must have the following

    3 Topics

at least 5 keywords per topic

Each keyword must have the following information

    Average monthly estimated search volume
    CPC value
    # of competing pages on Google

This process will yield the niche you SHOULD be targeting

    hi tonester and writeaway,
thanks a lot for this great and clear information.
i've heard ever that before we find a niche, we must find audiences for that niche, so that we can keep in touch with them, we can build relationship with them. sorry, that's just in my humble opinion :-)

I covered that in step 5 above. My approach is DATA-DRIVEN.

      Opinion doesn't count.

Data is what puts MONEY in your pockets!

Nowadays, niche blogging (method described above) is basic when it comes to making money online. It's the thing that everyone does -- even if they go off and choose to pursue other business models. When I got started, finding a niche was tricky for me, so I went into a niche that was related to what I majored in while attending university (Spanish).

I've since moved in and out of other niches to figure out which I like and which I don't. I wouldn't recommend that someone go into the make money online niche until they have had success outside of the niche with a legit program. It's the only way you learn what works and what doesn't. Niche blogging works especially well during the times of the year when lots of products are coming out.

The problem with newbies is they seem to believe everything that they read online. Mr X is placed in a situation at work, gets laid off and needs an alternative. Some super genius perfected the art of seo and getting his website to number 1 spot claiming to teach methods that make millions overnight. Just buy his ebook for $40 and you set for life.

The circle goes on and on. Newbie buys ebook after ebook hoping that things turn around but ends up losing more that he gained. Except for learning the hard way.

Good post Tonester. Just want to clarify the "keep emailing them and selling to them over and over again" part.

To newbies reading this, please don't just sell to your list over and over again. That's the fastest way to tick off like 80 percent of your list. You MUST deliver value! Most of your emails should be value driven, not selling.

Your pattern should look something like this-
Value email,Value email,Value email,Value email, Hard sell email

    Rinse and repeat.

Value can come in many forms-
Inspiration, Entertainment, Humor, Training, Free Tools, etc.
Generally speaking, whatever you think your niche would want/need/enjoy.

You want people to know, like and trust you. That's the 1st step.

After that point, the selling part comes much easier.

      Tonester and writeaway: thank you.

I'm not a newbie as such but since I've lurked in here throughout the years learning from the members to market my offline business, I wish I'd find these summaries years ago!

I would have save much of what gregs82 talks about!

Here's my 2 cents on finding a niche.

Writeaway's method is good and sound, but it might be a little complicated for newbies.

Here's a way to look at niches.

You can choose lower competition niches, or ones with tons of competition. And, it all depends on how you'll get traffic.

When I first got started, I wanted to pick a niche that didn't have a lot of competition, figuring that my chances of making money would be better with less competition - plus I'd have a better chance of ranking well in Google, and thus, get traffic. I was doing SEO at the time for traffic, and like many people, I got Google slapped. I decided right then that depending on SEO exclusively for traffic was a BAD idea. Now, it's OK to do SEO as part of a broad traffic plan. But don't depend on it as you main traffic source.

So, when you're paying for traffic, you can get into higher competition markets, because you're not trying to "beat" your competition in the SEO game.

Option #1: Choosing a niche with lower competition means doing Google Keyword searches as mentioned above and coming up with a good estimate on search volumes, then deciding if that's enough to make money. 1000 searches could be good, but seems downright minuscule when compared 6 and 7 figure searches for the biggies.

On the other hand, choosing niche with high competition means you don't have to do that research. You KNOW there is tons and tons of traffic. You KNOW there are tons and tons of people making a lot of money in that niche. You KNOW it's a good niche without guessing. And if you're paying for traffic, it doesn't matter. There is plenty of traffic to go around.

I firmly believe this is what you should do. I've also heard thru many reliable sources that all the big gurus do this, people making 7-figures per year. You won't make that kind of income going after small niches - but you can make a decent living if you choose the right one. But why guess? Why limit yourself? If you're happy making a living, fine. But aren't we all here because we want that "rich and famous" lifestyle?

        Some popular niches include:
        Make Money Online
        Dating
        Self Help
        Fitness
        Weight Loss
        Real Estate Investing
        ForEx Trading
Popular Hobbies such as Golf, Nascar, etc.

Think about it. In these niches, there will ALWAYS be tons of people online looking for information, and more are coming online every day. The volume of traffic in these niches is mega-huge huge huge!!!

So that's what I would recommend

Yes, I totally agree with that. My statement was a little misleading and I apologize. You do need to keep mailing them, but I didn't mean sell to them in every mail. I just meant over time you'd be selling to them over and over again.

By all means, DON'T promote and sell in every email. You're list will definitely abandon you in that case.

This "plan" keeps getting posted in different forms by different people. It's great to give newbies an overview, but treating it like it's a "plan" is mis-leading.

If you are really interested in helping newbies then post on exactly how to set up a sales funnel. Exactly how to generate traffic. What to say in their emails, etc.

Actionable information is always very helpful and well received.
