WWW vs non-www version of your website

Why do you need both? What is the benefit of adding both in webmaster tools?

I've had the www version for a month now and just tonight added the non www version of the website. The www version has already been indexed and crawled. So now what? *feeling sad*

    None.

The www version is a subdomain, and is not necessary.

It is a holdover from very early efforts to segregate public vs private internet facilities, but is no longer needed/recommended.

No real reason to feel sad as it can be easily rectified.

You can specify in webmaster tools that the non-www version is preferred, and you should check to make sure that the source code of your site does NOT reference any page/post with a www. prefix.

Personally I already go after the non-www as my primary the redirect the www to non-www. The reason for this is, from a search perspect non-www vs. www doesn't matter. However from a social standpoint the smaller your URL the better.

        Well... it is the internet.

Anyone can publish anything (unfortunately) so it's very easy to find BAD information on the internet as well.

As I said before - www. is just a subdomain, like any other subdomain. However, Google considers backlinks to the 2 (www vs non-www) separately, so if you are not consistent the resulting "link juice" from any off-site links will be diluted.

I prefer non-www, but the real key is to be consistent.

Haven't used "www" in a decade on any of my sites. And never had an issue with ranking or PPC or ..? And agree with Brent on the shorter version for social sites. In fact, set up tracking software on a short 5 letter domain and works like a dream...

  • You should always do a 301 redirect of the "www" to the "non-www," or vice versa if you prefer the former. If you use cPanel hosting then it is easy to do. Just set a 301 to anything for the "www" and then open up the .htaccess file to edit it to the "non-www."

www and non www version have no relation with ranking and seo of your website. However it is suggested to stick with one at a time.
