Blog idea is it workable

I am a overweight and thinking of writing a blog that will detail from day 1 my regime in losing weight. I am 46 and weigh 23 stone......this is not good obviously so I have to lose the weight.

I want to create a blog that is well written and entertains people as well as hopefully inspiring them to follow my lead. Obviously losing weight is my main goal.......but if I can make money off the back of it that would be fantastic.

Once the blog has been running a month or so, and I am losing weight...I would like to be able to offer weight loss related products as an affiliate or via a stand alone website that I can link to my blog.

I will be marketing/advertising the blog via social media, forums and hopefully some solid SEO. Are there any other methods I should seriously consider for this type of blog ? The site will be high in good quality original content, it will have a lot of photos and I will be keeping a video diary which I plan to use youtube for then embed the videos on the blog or just direct people to the youtube account.

I would be very interested in hearing peoples views both negative and positive on this idea.

Thanks in advance Steve

It's a fine (and recommended) idea. If the blog is presented well-enough, you may even attract the attention of your local media with a good press release.

Journeys will always have there place. With most things, much more is said than actually done - that's why there's way more products telling you how to lose weight and not many people actually successfully losing weight permanently.

Are there any other methods I should seriously consider for this type of blog?
Join up to a few weight loss forums which fits into your demographic. You should be able to gain a nice following as you won't be just-another-marketer trying to sell their product right away. You'll be building a relationship which then you can later recommend products to get that sweet sweet income.

It is a journey of sorts and I am hoping that people in a similar prediciment will be interested enough to follow my progress. I am aiming to lose 4-5 stone over a 10-12 month period not by dieting as such.more a lifestyle change.

I also have a few health issues which hopefully will take a step forwards such as high blood pressure and gout. There are quite a few smaller niches that I can target from within the blog.

Obviously it will only be a success if I lose the weight, change my appearance and people see this happening...........this is why I dont really see any monetize stuff happening for first 3 or 4 months. Hopefully after 2 stone has gone things will take shape.

I love my food.........I certainly wont survive on a bland diet of lettuce, veg etc......I love tasty food so am hoping I can do it with a smile !!

Definitely a solid blogging plan you can go with.

I personally love journey's (as many people does), so if they are struggling with the same, you'll have an audience that will come back for more which is extremely important.

Make a detailed plan about the traffic though. You can also start with some sort of pre launch on forums and communities, gain a bit of interaction and relationships there.

This same idea has been tried many, many times on private blogs - most often without the monetization aspect - just people wanting to be held accountable to their followers for their weight loss.

My suggestion: you'd better have great content, interesting content, unique content that people will want to follow.

Your viewers won't really care about you or your weight loss . . . their one concern will be "what's in it for me?" WIIFM

Your site will be as successful as you are at showing people how your weight loss can be translated to their weight loss desires.

When you really think about it, there are very few subjects as boring and uninviting as following someone's weight loss. It's like watching paint dry - it takes forever for action to be noticeable. That's why I say, you'd better be a great content writer with a knack for making the bland interesting.

      Good luck,

I could not agree more Steve, it is a terrible subject matter. It bores the hell out of me too. Unfortunately I am a bit of a porky pig so I am kind of stuck with what nature gave me.

I would love to write a blog giving tips on "looking good in armani jeans", or "How to pull 5 women a night"...........somehow I dont see me cutting the mustard in those niche's unless of course armani do spandex and the women are being pulled along in a rickshaw.

I am going to make losing weight cool & fun.........I am going to sex it up baby.......ohh yeah lets do it !! :-)

It's a good idea and how you should do a weight-loss blog. Documenting your weight loss will not only motivate you but build trust with your audience (when it comes to the products and stuff you recommend). With a blog of this kind, you might also want to figure out the conversion weight for stones vs. pounds (U.S.). I just looked it up, and the article said that 1 stone = 14 pounds (lbs).

If you want to offer affiliate products, make sure that you use these products yourself and that they directly help you in losing your weight.

If people follow you and check on your progress and see what you do, as an exercise, and eat, work to help you, they would naturally assume that you use these. If you don't, but you hawk an affiliate product in the niche, for the sake of, that could be an issue.

Good Point Joey, i think losing pounds sounds better than losing stones.......IE "I lost 7 pounds" or "I lost half a stone".

Losing pounds is easier to make look like an achievement of scale.

    Hey Steve.

For the positives, it's a great idea and there is tons of money in the weigh loss niche.

For the negatives, there are 50,000 other sites doing the exact same thing.

So it's really up to you....can you do better than what's already out there? Can you really commit to building an awesome resource? Will you lose weight even if the site completely fails? Will you stop losing weight if the site is a massive success?

If you have the right answer to most of these questions, then go for it. If you're not sure, then maybe the site isn't a good idea unless it will be your main motivation to dropping the pounds. Because that's the big win here....getting healthy.

Although this idea is nothing new, it's still a great idea and can earn you many followers and (potentially) income.

One of the key factors here is to also have a YouTube channel. Videos that show real progress tend to get very popular. You don't even need to speak or show your face, as you can rely on text and showing only your body (with nice background music).

    Conclusion: Yes, go for it.

One very important thing that I believe will make a huge impact is you not only create blog posts, but post videos as well. Go on a 90 day challenge posting 1 blog and 1 video daily. The more content you create, the better. It will not only inspire others, but this is something that you can be known for. Go on a 90 day weight loss challenge while encouraging others to document it through blogs and videos. This will definitely click. As for promotions, you can do guest blogs and FB PPC for traffic. Always keep in mind that you should always be building a list. This makes everything long-term. You should also start an Instagram page. That would help a lot with followers.

      Hey securman,
In all due respect to other Warriors here, I personally do not think this scenario is boring at all.

As a matter of fact, many people including myself enjoy seeing others plight and their struggles and their eventual successes.

If anything curiosity will capture some people.

      I like it.

People want to lose weight themselves but they also like entertainment !

I know its been done over and over but if you are telling an interesting story that may be a little different than others it can be hugely engaging and very popular.

I would just find some aspect in approaching this model that is a lot different or has an angle others have not done yet.

Is there something in your younger years or childhood years that could have been the impetus for the weight gain?

The reason I ask is not to be nosy but if it is unusual or on the other hand if is 'relatable' to other peoples' experience...well either way it can captivating to an audience.

      Use your creativity

Try and bait your local media/health magazines using dramatic before and after pics, this way you'll attract some decent links that not only send through traffic but good seo juice too

    Hey Steve

I think that is a great idea... it could really turn into something for you in the future.

Brand your blog as you though... don't give it any fancy weight loss title --- You can give yourself a tag line etc... but your domain name should you be your name

Don't just have it as a blog though... make sure that you have a you tube channel and that you are embedding your videos on your blog... so other people can connect with you. When they see you and hear you it is way more powerful.

Always always always direct people back to your blog site. That is your hub. That's where they get to know you.

Don't send them to youtube channel always back to blog site... it is easy for them to get distracted on youtube.

You can join up with a company to use their products as well... to show what you are using to help you lose the weight... that will help as well. But don't make that the focus just the products.

There are a lot of companies out there that have good products to help you lose weight... it is a billion dollar industry.

If you want to bounce any other ideas off my Steve happy to help out.

    Just send me a message

    Cheers

Wow, great replies off everyone and some interesting ideas.

The ultimate goal is losing weight but the prospect of building a top quality informative, entertaining blog in this niche that I can make money from for the long term is a powerful motivator.

I will be starting the blog towards the end of september, got some ground work to do first.

Hi Steve, I personally think you can have a lot of success with this. I should consider this though: Weight Loss is a very competitve niche. You will have to try and target low competition keywords. Try and find a niche within the weightloss niche. And if you want to monetize try to start early on writing up product reviews. Honest ones! Not the gushing I-want-to-make-a-sale ones that are everywhere about the place. The more honest you are the more trust you will get from your readers. And if you are trusted, then if you make a recommendation people will buy.
