Thank You Button. What it means to me. What about you?

Hi All,

I find myself clicking the Thanks Button quite a bit. With time on my hands I took the time to analyze just "why" I do it. Actually I find that my reasons for clicking thanks are about the same when I say "Thanks" or "Thank You" offline.

You helped me in any way shape or form. "Thanks."

You helped someone else. "Thanks."

You made me laugh with you, at you or at myself. I love to laugh. "Thank you."

You made me think. "Thanks."

You made me change my mind. Wow, now that's something. "THANKS."

You gave me an idea that made me or saved me some money (happens a lot here). "THANK YOU."

I Whole Heartedly agree with a position you take or an idea you have. "Thanks."

Whenever Allen Posts anything "The sky is blue today." "Thanks."

I find myself using the Thanks Button instead of posting oneliners. But, hey, I already have 30 posts.

Thank you,

George Wright

    George,

I love saying thanks to posts about thanks. Let me be the first...

I find the thanks button a huge time saver, as well as a better way to keep the forum organized... it's a lot quicker clicking the thanks when you find something of extra value to you, rather than cluttering up the forum with the dreaded one liners.

I am always delighted to receive a 'Thanks' - especially the unexpected ones that are given for sharing basic knowledge, tips, links, etc.

I click the thanks button for many of the same reasons posted above. It saves writing out thank you notes that don't really contribute anything to the topic being discussed, but that are a nice gesture for the person who posted information that you like or appreciate. It's a nice way to say thanks without cluttering the thread,

Thanks George....Couldn't have said it better myself.

I wonder if anyone else here occasionally wishes there were also a "no Thanks" button as well. On second thought that would probably get ugly pretty fast.

      George.

I agree with "All of the above" reasons that you stated.

However, let me add one important reason for hitting the Thanks button...

It cuts down on all the one-word posts that say "Thanks" and actually shows others something about your reputation.

      Regards,

      John

      ps - Thanks!

      Nice post George.

I think the 'thanks' button is a valuable asset to the forum and it will help us form a stronger community here.

I've just taken to using it and it does feel good to be thanked and to let others know that you've appreciated what they had to say.

It also demonstrates a contributor's "trust factor"...if there is such a thing.
I noticed that if you've received a lot of them it tends to have sort of a reciprocating effect.

Now if only we could invent a "Thanks" button in everyday situations like when there's rush hour traffic and someone graciously lets you pass to get to the onramp instead pretending you weren't there.

    Great reasons, all.

In general, I use the thanks button as I would if it were an actual verbal conversation. In other words, if the post were being said to me, and I would say "thanks" then I click the button.

The reasons in the OP cover most of it for me.

    All the best,
    Michael

It's at the bottom right of each post. There is a limit on how many you can give each day, I don't know the limit.

Nice thread, George. I didn't know there was a limit on giving thanks (doesn't that sound strange?) until today, when suddenly I found all the Thanks buttons had disappeared. I wasn't keeping count, but at a guess it was after I'd given about 20.

(Boy, that is such an odd idea, from a spiritual point of view, that there could ever be any kind of limit on giving thanks. I guess I can see it as a practical matter in this context, but all I can say is wow. Allen, are you listening?)

          LOL Steve,

As a matter of fact Allen did listen. A while back the limit was 5 or so per day. There was a request for more and Allen increased the limit, with the warning not to abuse it. He probably didn't want the gesture to become meaningless.

After a few hours your thanks arsenal is recharged. I felt it appropriate to thank as many as I could here in this thread so I ran out too.

Hi SantiSantana - Could be wrong, but I think the button isn't visible until you have a certain number of posts... I remember not being able to find it either, until one day - *poof* it was just *there*. I don't remember when it happened though

For me, it's showing up at the bottom of the post, inside the text area, as the last button to the right (just next to "Quick Reply").

re: The "thanks" button - as mentioned, I've only recently gained access - but I absolutely LOVE the idea! I wish all forums had something similar enabled!

I like to use the "thanks button" to show my appreciation when someone answers a question that I have asked or gives me advice or helpful tips.

Since we are not face to face it seems the best way to tell someone "thanks for your time! I really appreciate your answer!"

100% agree. To be honest it's kind of annoying when someone's looking for help and they don't seem to appreciate it. Especially when you see threads that no one's really interested in and don't get many views.

I always take the time to look at these ones as it sucks when you don't get a response and it's nice to know you helped. It encourages users to help more which is basically why we have this forum.
