I have a very simple request for anyone who writes an ebook.

Could you please number the pages - it's easy to do!

I print out a lot of stuff that I buy and have just spent the last 30 minutes trying to collate a 64 page ebook that had fallen off the printer table when I nipped outside with the dog!

It would have taken seconds if the pages had been numbered!

Just my little rant - sorry!

Thanks for pointing out Karen... I think this is an area some of us just tend to neglect about which will cause a lot of inconvenience for the readers.

Collating a 64 page e-book without page numbers is not fun. :|

I'm so glad it's not just me!

It's especially difficult to put a book back together if you know little or nothing about the subject matter! [speaks the voice of experience!]

Thanks for the timely reminder - I just finished a free report about an hour ago, converted it to pdf and you have just reminded me that i didn't number the pages - I had better go and do it now because like you I too prefer to read printed pages rather than stuff on the screen and the lack of page numbers is a pain.

    Thanks again

I agree, Karen. And I have a related gripe:

If your ebook is longer than about a dozen pages, include a table of contents with working links to the chapters and sub-chapters, and include bookmarks to same. This is reasonably easy to do in Word or OpenOffice. I really bugs me to see a TOC without links or, worse, with non-working links. Almost as bad as no TOC at all.

For my very first ebook I used a program called TK3 Author by
a company called NightKitchen. This software had all the
features you mentioned. But some people complained about
having to download the TK3 reader (which is free) and when
you opened the book it will cover your computer screen.

I eventually stopped using it and went to the PDF that people
said they preferred. I think I was the only internet marketer
        who was using this program.

But all the questions I see people ask about ebooks were answered
by that program --live url links, one click to chapters, popup explanations,
embedded videos, bookmarking, reader notes etc.

        May deserve a second look.

Hi, Ray. Actually you can do all of that in PDF now. I think that popup explanations require an extra tool, but you can get all the rest with standard PDF. Reader notes require that you enable commenting.

        Good point Steve,

If you are reading a book online, working links to chapters is a must. Saves so much time scrolling up and down.

I still have a couple of ebooks on my hard drive that are 150+ pages that I still haven't read completely because I hate having to wade through all the 'stuffing' to get to the 'meat'. I get fed up and move on to something else.

I totally agree. It is amazing how many ebook authors do not number their pages or have a table of contents. I have another suggestion for authors. Do not put colorful headers and footers on your pages. I do not want to waste my printer ink on that.

    Hi,

Yes, I also like numbered pages, it is so easy to manage them.

Myself whenever i create and publish an ebook or report, i always use a template
which has page numbers at the right-top corner...

YES!!! I hate that!!! Save all that graphical stuff for your sales page to get me to BUY the dang thing. Unless you have to include images as part of the content I need in the ebook, please stop adding your ecover or box shot and those dang headers and footers. It SCREAMS "I'm an inconsiderate jerk!" just like not using pagination as the OP mentioned.

    OK, done ranting.
