Writing Ezine article, but not keyword

Hey, does it ever work to write an ezine article related to your keywords, but not your main keywords?

For example, my main keywords are gluten free chocolate. Well, I tend to think articles on desserts are boring. If I wrote an article on gluten free living, would that have the same impact as writing for my keyword?
