around 3 or 4 years to get any income. Then it was another 2 years before profit. Lots of things to learn. It would have been better to have a guide or a coach - would have saved me years.

There is no set time where you earn money or not.

It depends on which strategy you use.

Very TRUE. I got sales in just one day on eBay but it took me many weeks to get my first sale with my online shop... and many months to get my first pay from adsense.

I got lucky from the outset.

This goes back over 2 decades. While at university I was working for a local hotel. They discovered my geeky passion for the internet and hired me to design a website. So you could say my profit was instant.

It wasn't too long before I fell into affiliate marketing. Yet again, the wait wasn't much. Days. Part of it was because it was simply easier years ago. Fewer affiliate opportunities, but on the up side, considerably less competition.

If you're a newbie reading this, today or 10 years from now, and assuming PPL offers still exist, here's my advice: get your feet wet promoting PPLs (pay per lead offers).

I truly do not understand how it can take years to earn money (no offense). You find the right free offer, you promote it to the right people. Blammo.

Edit: How did I celebrate my first day in profit? I remember going out to a shop, buying cigarettes, walking home and while puffing away I was thinking, "I could get used to this."

Do you still design websites on hire? What are PPL offers and how can I make money with them? Can you suggest me some good PPL websites?

As a favour to people I know, but no, I'm not for hire as a designer. My time is better spent doing other things. You can find plenty of cracking designers for hire on WF, though.

PPL stands for pay per lead. Give you an example: SWTOR.com. You can promote that site through various affiliate networks and earn $2.25 for each person you refer who completes the form and signs up for free. No credit card is required. They just fill the form and you earn your commission.

That particular form on SWTOR - found when you click the sign up button - is what we call a "short form." Typically, short forms pay quite a bit less than long forms, since the latter require more details and conversions can therefore be slightly harder to come by. But commission rates are not just determined by the size of the form. Factors are as follows:

        1. Form Size.
        2. Offer Type
        3. Market Type

As an example, compare paid survey commissions to dating website commissions. Since dating sites typically earn more from free joins than survey sites, affiliates are paid more for the dating offers.

PPL commission rates for me currently run between $1 and $12.50. I always recommend newbies consider PPLs since they're easier to convert than pay per sales or revshare. As you become more experienced, the trick is not to leave PPLs behind, but to simply diversify what you promote.

You'll often see people suggest that you stick to commission offers. Bad move. Yes, on the one hand it is rather nice referring someone to an offer and, in theory, securing a regular monthly commission, but the world rarely works so perfectly.

People cancel. And in some markets, such as dating for instance, you make a heck of a lot more money from PPS (pay per signup) than commission, since the industry average commission rate is around 2.5 months, and when you're sending volume traffic you receive more from a PPS. So diversification is key. You'd be surprised, many veterans like myself only promote PPL. I don't. I promote all types of offer. But when you learn how to send consistent traffic to PPLs, in a sense it's like a regular commission, since your EPCs are usually very consistent, day to day, month to month, year to year.

Speaking of which. It all boils down to what we call EPC - earnings per click. How much you earn, on average, for each click you send to an affiliate offer. Some markets, and indeed some offers, offer higher EPCs for PPL, some are better for PPS, and so forth.

Quite a bit more information than you wanted, but my fingers tend to ramble when I just get up. We do not. Oh yes you do. Sign off before he thinks you're mad. Good idea.

Thanks Tom. BTW where do you get (or how do you generate) traffic from? Is it free traffic or paid traffic that you use? I would prefer going the free route for now as I don't have anything substantial to invest. Also, is PPL same as CPC and CPA? Do you offer mentorship programs?

            You're welcome, shibdasmun.

I generate traffic from free and paid sources. If traffic can be generated from something, I'm likely on it. Big traffic addict. You're right to stick with free traffic sources when starting out, regardless of how much startup capital you have. I look at free traffic as a training ground. You learn the ropes. You move onwards and upwards.

CPC stands for "cost per click." When you do PPC (pay per click) marketing, the CPC is how much you pay for each click.

CPA generally stands for "cost per action." Advertisers (like SWTOR) work with CPA Networks, who put affiliates in touch with their offer or offers, and where an agreed upon payment is promised for an agreed upon action. In other words, and for an example, the business behind SWTOR are on the PeerFly marketplace and promise to pay $2.25 to the PeerFly affiliates when they refer people to their site, through a uniquely identifying link code, that complete the sign up form.

You are welcome to PM me if you do have any mentorship program I suppose a helping hand at the very beginning would offer quite a lot of confidence if nothing else. It is hard to find someone who really knows their stuff and are not just after your money so to speak (those quasi-seo experts come to mind). I am just a freelance writer and PPL is new to me. Anyways, you have been more than helpful. I was just checking if CPA and PPL are the same thing

I got lucky and started 15 years ago using email(co-reg) to generate traffic to CPA/Lead Generation offers and it worked from day one. Keep in mind that back then it was like shooting fish in a barrel. The money just rolled in. To this day, I'm still doing the same thing and never stopped...data acquisition / monetization.

    • I started about 2 years ago in the Network Marketing industry and it took me about 2 months to get my first sale. I basically talked to everyone in sight, which was a newbie move at the time, but eventually I learned that I needed to find the right people who were looking for what I was offering. I capitalized on my first sale and used it as leverage to make more sales, and it slowly created a snowball effect. After realizing I needed to reach more targeted people, I switched over to internet Marketing and things have never been the same.

Always capitalize on your results to get more results!

    Hi W

A few days online to earn cents, a few months to earn dollars, 2 - 3 years to earn enough dough to support a traveling lifestyle, and 5 years to earn a full time income.

Disclaimer! IF I did things from a freeing, inspired space, from Day 1, I suspect i'd earn a full time income in 6 months to 1 month....but everybody's story is different and I'd not be the island hopping, Amazon best selling author I am today unless I struggled and went mad at times during my lean days

Remember too: you write your own story. None of these posts have anything to do with your earning potential or earnings window. Your ability to make a profit relates to your willingness to create value, to connect with pros and to do freeing, inspired but sometimes scary things, and doing those things habitually.

    All the best!

I began making money as soon as I started advertising in newspaper ads and radio a month later. Raked in over $20,000 a month. But profits were very different. $8,000 The rest went to paying bills like bandwidth and AT&T.
Of course the biz was an ISP and webhosting company.

Today I am a freelance writer and affiliate. I began profiting from writing from my first client. Affiliate marketing took a little time. To date in AM about $200 total.

Before the Internet, I was a part-time reporter for a local newspaper back in my college and post-graduate days. Frequently I would get requests by reps from a well-known MLM company to do write-ups for new product releases and lab research reports. They always got quite a few signups from this exposure, which I found out later was rather substantial. After one spectacularly successful article, I was invited to celebrate with some of the top dogs.

Then, after a short stint in the corporate world as an economist for a bank, I began "article marketing"; first offline then later with online and offline publications. This almost immediate, early success has been growing nearly exponentially for over 20 years (16 years online). Although I'm now semi-retired due to other business and personal interests, traffic continues to come in to my websites from articles often written long ago.

In 2002 I did a CIW ( Certified Internet Webmaster ) course and learnt a bit of web development. Through word of mouth and friends of friends I got a few contracts building websites. These were handcoded 6 page websites but I charged £500 and they didn't take more than a few days.

Unfortunately in London at the time it was barely enough to pay the rent so I had to get a day job.

There are still loads of people who need websites built and it's so quick to get a Wordpress site set up. Hosting affiliates are very generous too. If you need to get started quickly and know how to build a website it's a good way to start.

My first sale took me a couple of weeks. I wasn't too sure about IM back then and i was testing things with free traffic methods so you could consider it my first sale and profit. I earned about $15 from a affiliate product.

Things could have definitely gone a lot faster if i had chosen to use some paid traffic back then. Would probably have made the sale in the first day or so.

For anyone that is still expecting their first sale, I don't think there is a fixed answer of how fast or slow your first sale should be coming in. Different traffic generation methods in different niches takes different amounts of time to get returns. Just persevere and take minor adjustments if you see a lack of results. Your first sale will arrive before you know it.

"Good traffic" is subjective. Good to one person might be 500 uniques a day; to another, 5,000,000. But when we say "earn money," we're not being subjective, and if it takes someone years to see any form of ROI, then something is very wrong indeed.

A few months but just to earn some dollars (in the $100-$200 per month figure). To really able to have a steady good income ($2000-$5000 x month) probably will take for some people 1-2 years of constant work.

The problem is that most people quit because they just want to earn quick cash and don't see results.
