I use Wordfence plus Stealth Login Page. Both free plugins.

Technically, you only need Wordfence. I use Stealth Login Page too because I don't like to have to use my cell phone as part of a secure sign in.

With Wordfence, I change the settings for lockout tries and lockout times. I set mine to 5 tries until lockout and then lock them out for 12 hours.

    Good luck!

Does stealth login do something that better wordpress security does not? Curious

Wordfence security plugin is fine for most blogs. The best security for your blog will actually begin in your file config area. Changing your password every month or so, and making sure if you change anything in the code of your theme that you /close permissions before you leave cpanel.

Of course the usual backing up your blog every week.

    Hope this helps

I use Wordfence and Sucuri along with Cloudflare. I also do some manual protective measures though and don't solely rely on plugins and services.

Also, there are some entire countries I block completely from my sites because of their incessant hacking attempts. I've never had an actual real customer from any of those countries either and they were taking up 90% of my resources before I blocked them. After the block, page speed improved tremendously, sales went up, I got a lot of time back that I was spending fighting the hackers and troubleshooting my site speed, and I was able to stay with my two VPS instead of getting dedicated servers.

To have the best protection possible you need a combination of plugins. I use Wordfence plus Bulletproof security (BPS) plugins. The first one takes care of file scanning, firewall rules with throttling etc and the second one takes care of several other attacks such as SQL injection, cross-site scripting, direct file access etc. The two plugins compliment each other nicely.
