Thinking about starting a website, but I notice the .com of the domain I want is taken even though it is not an active site.

I plan on trying to buy it from the person who currently has it.

A couple of questions:

1) Is .net, .org, etc okay if I decide to do that? I finally found a domain name I like.

2) If in the future, I want to transfer the site to a .com, is that relatively easy to do, or is that not possible? I figure it's possible, but I don't have much experience with creating websites so I figured I would ask.

    To answer your questions.

1.) Yes, using a different domain extension like .net or .org is fine

2.) yes, very easy to transfer, you can do a redirect so people using the old name can also be redirected to the new domain.

Perfectly fine to use .net domain and move it to .com when you get it.

I dont feel you need to worry much in this case.

Beware that if you start your business on a .net or .org, you will always lose traffic to the .com

And the more successefull your .net or .org website becomes, the more the .com owner will want for parting with his domain.

If you can, always start on a dot com.

Just on a side note. There are some great sites that generate domain name ideas based on your keywords. You really should be able to find a .com domain that is available.

    For example: namemesh.com

For one of my sites, at least, I purchased all .com, .org, .net, etc. So no one else could have them. (Costs more money, of course, than just buying one.) And I "parked" the .org and .net onto the .com. So if anyone types in the .net or .org version, they end up at the .com anyway.
