Skewed local keyword research

Hi
Had a quick query for anyone out there using a keyword research tool to search for potential keywords to build a niche site around; A lot of the keywords that I have been searching are giving me back top 10 website results for a city a few hundred kilometers away, I am from Australia so we would class that as close by haha, I am wanting "Local" results for Australia but not specifically for that area. A lot of these results have very low keyword competitiveness, which is great, except I am worried that because the search tools seems to be giving me results from a very small area it's not a true indication of the competitiveness of all of Australia and I could be trying to build a site in an area a lot more competitive than I would like. If this is actually the top 10 result that everyone Australia wide is receiving I would be stoked, it just seems awfully coincidental getting a lot of results from that one area. Has anyone else experienced this or got a suggestion on why I would be getting these results? Wasn't sure where the best place would be to ask this question so if anyone knows where I would most likely get an answer that would also be greatly appreciated!

Cheers in advance!

There's no way to see "country-wide" specific results for a "local" keyword. If you're searching a keyword that Google deems as related to "local," then different people in Australia will see different results based on their location.

Put simply, if you're seeing local pack results, it's not what everyone in Australia is seeing. Results will vary by location. There's no such thing as competitiveness for all of Australia on a local keyword.

    Make sense?

Edit: If you mean the results beyond the local pack then disregard. Those are more likely to be similar regardless of region if the search term is a general one that doesn't include a location, etc.

Whatever keyword tool you're using should have search volume? That's all you should be looking at.
