Frustrating Experience With Amazon Review

I have a book on Amazon that I wrote about a year ago. I'll admit it's a very short book that I sell for $2.99 but if people put the information to use, they can make some sales with it in their online business. I am currently looking to expand the book to add more information and make it more valuable for my customers.

However, a few months ago a review was left by someone. They never purchased the book. However they left me a 1-star review based on the fact that the "Preview" was too short. I contacted them and let them know I wasn't able to make the preview any longer.

This is due to Amazon controlling the length of the preview. I would give away the first chapter if Amazon allowed me to control preview length.

I contacted Amazon yesterday to ask them if the review can be removed.

This morning they emailed me back stating they could not remove the review because it does not violate their terms of service. This agitated me a little seeing as the review was nothing more than "sample was too short, will find another book with a longer sample".

I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm considering either getting in touch with the reviewer and giving my book free to them, or calling Amazon to see if they can do anything while chatting with them live.

What are your thoughts? Should I do anything or just leave it?

Can a review be left by non-buyers?? Anyway, it depends on what he said on his review. If the review goes like this, "not impressed, the preview was too short!"... I don't think it will ever make an impact to prospects. The only problem I can see here is the Big 1 Star that can easily frustrate a consumer without even reading the comment which may usually result to a higher bounce rate. I had quite of them silly negative reviews on eBay (feedback on eBay version) but I really can't do anything about it than making a reply to counter the feedback. You need some reviews of 5 Stars to counter or overshadow the 1 Star feedback... Have someone to buy it and if he's happy, ask for a 5 Star review or you can give incentives such as bonus or discount to get their best review. You can also ask your friends to give good reviews of your product. I know that involving friends is quite a dishonesty in the business but they can be used to balance your review if that's the only way as you've been reviewed unfairly in the first place based on what you've said.

That's what I was thinking. I experienced something similar, but after contacting Amazon, they removed the review based on the fact that it was made by a non-buyer.

      Maybe something changed over there.

Yes! Reviews can be left by non-buyers. They don't even have to have bought the item on Amazon. However, you can ask Amazon to remove the review if it contains feedback about the seller or shipping process. If a false review was written by a competitor and you have the evidence to prove it, you can also bring up your case with Seller Support.
