Blogging in two languages: Tips and advices needed

Hi everybody!

My native language is french but I also write and speak very well english. Should I post my blog in those two languages or should I concentrate only on one?

Also, should I use different social media accounts for my french posts and another one for my english one?

Thanks for your help!

    Hey I speak French too!

I would do it in both languages. Although the amount of French traffic you will be getting is a lot smaller, you will certainly have a lot less competition since most marketers write everything in English.

The real deal is if you want to rank in French then French hosting, French domain, French back links, French context = French ranking. Same thing goes for English of course.

Just writing it in both languages on the same site won't do you much if any good.

I do a city guide for a city in another country and I market it to American tourists plus 2 other main tourist countries for this city. The other sites are translated into those languages and all three follow the formula I listed above.

If you're going to do both languages I'd definitely be splitting up the FB pages.

But on Facebook you can choose the language of your public. Should I create two Facebook pages, one for each language or just use one and specify the public for each post?

What is your targeted Audience? If you think the audience is only French People, you can use only the french Language. On the flip side if you think it is about the International NICHE, you can use both language. I think your asked questions answer you already got. Thanks a lot.

Hello, nice post and good question.
I would suggest you to prefer english and post your blog in english language because the amount of traffic you are gonna receive in english posts is way better than it will be in case of french written blogs.
If you want to rank in french domains and listings, only then you can post the blogs in french language.

I've had difficulties before in my previous job as I'm doing blog maintenance for 2 different languages, English and Japanese. But most of our readers understand English so we focused more on creating content for our English speaking readers. I agree with most of the what other have said. Try to check which market has more readers - English speaking readers or French Speaking readers.

Salut (sorry, it will be the only one French word ). I'm French and I faced this hard question too...

When it's about international audience, I manage my site in English and French with a button/link for switching and an URL parameter to directly reach a specific version ; default being English when you don't specify anything. Also, I managed the things to get a responsive switch. About the blog section (but I'm not really a blogger ; I should but I'm not constant in this field), I'm writing every post in both languages with, again, English at top and French below. When the post is a long one I indicate that the French version is at bottom in the first line (as a small note). You can see this in action in these two websites of mine, for example : Dedee for ebook signing - Dedee pour la dédicace d'ebook and Eric Lequien : auteur logiciel

When the audience is French only, of course I do it in French only. For example, in Eric Lequien Esposti : auteur, EL ROOT, Les Têtes Brulées Ed., etc.

Very good question. In this case you should take care about your audience. What is your targeted audience? If the audience can understand both, you can use the both language, there is no problem. On the other hand if your targeted audience is only English speaker, you should not use the French Language. There will no benefit. Thanks a lot.
