Feeling down about ever making money

So I have been working on two affiliate marketing sites recently and have started to feel like they might be a waste of time. I look at them so often that now I dont even know if they are good or not, if that makes any sense.
I need some help and pointers please if anyone has any.
Thanks

Do they get much traffic? Is it TARGETED traffic? Are you promoting converting products?/Would you buy it yourself? Have you used buying keywords? Does your sites look credible?

Ask yourself these questions, and you might get one step closer
Also, do you have any distractions on the affiliate sites? Opt-in form? Ads?
Focus on the main thing you want your visitors to do on your site. Whether it's clicking your ads, clicking on your affiliate links, signing up to your list etc.

    I hope that helps,

In the long run, I suspect the misspelling of "recipes" in the url and heading for one of the sites really won't be helpful to you at all; sorry, but as you can see discussed in many threads here and elsewhere, quite apart from the obvious SEO problems, there really are a lot of people who have difficulty taking seriously sites with a misspelling in the title/url.

I have to say I agree with this. I suspect that when people do a search and it is corrected by search engine, people click on the correct spelling. For example, "did you mean recipes" in bright blue above the results. When they click on that your site may not be in the results because of your targeted misspelled keyword. I make spelling errors and when that pops up I always click it!

I do however suggest that you do not give up. No one who quits succeeds!

What sort of traffic are you getting on the sites?

If its low, have you tried posting a few articles or getting involved in some related forums. There are plenty of parenting forums for your diaper site.

But above all just keep plugging away at it.

Its like trying to push start a bus , hurts like hell to get it going but once it starts rolling....... well you try and stop a moving bus LOL

    Hi Maria,

What's more important than your site is how you're accessing your target audience.

If you're sending the wrong people to your site, you won't make money. If you're not sending enough of the right people, you'll struggle.

Having a site or somewhere to send them is the easy bit - it's much more important to focus on finding and creating an effective way to access enough people to be able to make money if you have something they want (or know where to send them to get it).

If you're not making money it's because you're not touching your target audience in the right way.

I actually did research on using the misspelled "recipies" for my vegan site and it gets more hits than had I actually spelled it correctly.
Thanks for all the pointers so far everyone!

That's because the competition is higher for when it is spelled correctly (of course), so it's easy to rank for mis-spellings, but the traffic is lower so usually you need to work harder to make decent money.

That's almost always true, but that's what makes it a good strategy for many who need quicker success to stay motivated. If you're good at finding such keywords in a niche, you can usually get 5 or 10 of them ranked a whole lot faster than just one correctly spelled version. If those 5-10 misspellings have traffic that adds up to at least as much as the correct version, you're golden.

Lots of ways to skin this cat, Andy.

    Hi Maria

Even if you have done some research into the misspelling of recipes, I would still also include the correct spelling!! You've taken quite a risk in only targeting those that can't spell!!

Alos, your site looks nice and clean. As a pure suggestion, have you tried the products you're promoting? Have you tried removing those, and perhaps promote a vegan recipe book maybe from Amazon?

To get help you are going to have to answer the questions already asked here. I will recap:

    Are you sites getting traffic?

    How are you driving traffic?

Are you using the right keywords?

Is your site optimized for these words?

Does the offer convert for others?

Is your website well designed and does it make you look credible?

If you are just putting a few affiliate banners on your pages, you really need a lot of traffic to get conversions.

You should consider putting actual specfic products on your sites or even build in a complete shop, perhaps an Amazon shop or one that is generated by a datafeed. However, datafeeds can be technicaly daunting and expensive to start e.g. Commission Junction will charge $250 to set them up for you, and the software could be expensive.

What I suggest if you can look at GoldenCan and Popshops which would make things easier for you.

  • I liked the look of the sites overall.

What struck me was that the sites might benefit for a little more in depth content. The kind of market that this appeals to is typically intelligent and as such doesn't mind reading a little bit more. Adding a bit more text (but not too much) would give the site a little more gravitas.

I also wondered if thinking a bit more laterally about this group and targeting keywords around people into the natural lifestyle but not specifically diapers or vegan recipes might help bring in some other traffic.

Also have you found some simple content that you can knock into a free report that you can put your links into and offer the PDF to associated webmasters to offer to their lists?

  • Hey Mariahm,

I checked out the blogs in your sig. I can't really judge their potential for income earnings just by skimming through sites (if only! :p)... But I would say, if you did your research on the niches you chose, and you are doing proper marketing strategies, at the minimum, using article marketing, and submitting posts to social sites (digg, etc..) the sites should start racking in traffic, and hopefully earnings. if not, try changing the websites formation. Maybe put ads in other places. test new things out.

The most important thing you can do with any online website venture is make sure you chose a profitable niche with lots of room for expansion and buyer potential. If not, then you are most definitely wasting your time.

I recommend you read Jason Parker's eBook on this subject. It would really help out anyone looking to get it right from the beginning.

Link to Free Guide: Click Here

If you have the market part down, take article marketing seriously and go for creating a solid 30 articles for your site (400 words/article) and 30 articles to submit to article directories. Do not use the same article for your website and article directories. Thats why you should do 30-30... Be sure to use ezinearticles.com as one of your article directories your submitting to. The better the quality of the article, the more people will go about visiting your website after reading the article.

Note: If you/or if you hire a pro writer can not think of 30 things to write about in the subject, then the niche probably isn't worth going into when looking at it in a money making perspective.

    Hope this helped.

This feeling is natural and everyone goes through it. It all depends on what you do after you feel this. You can either give up, and not make money online, or stick with it and slowly increase your income overtime.

I took a look at your vegan site - definitely a good niche to be in right now.

But it needs work. The only adverts I saw for your affiliate programs are your side banners. No one looks at that stuff anymore.

Try and embed your affiliate links into your articles - I have had a lot of success with this. I would say you are probably missing out on a lot of sales because of your lack of text links.

Your sites look decent. I'd suggest continue adding more content and integrating more 'commission landmines" into your content....Adsense, Adbrite, Kontera, TextLinkAds etc... you can also join PayPerPost and start generating some extra income that way also.

    Hi Maria,

I feel for ya!!! And here's my suggestion...

Your themes are beautiful but your writing is a bit blah and uninfomative (don't know if thats a word or not). Try putting a little hutz in your hutzpa. For instance:

"Here is a good recipe to make for baby's when they are six months of age."

"Your Six Month Old Is Gonna Love You For This..."

And then a short paragraph WHY. Then the recipe.

    GIVE... GIVE... GIVE... to receive.

    Also...

The traffic that's coming in - What are you doing with it? I don't see you collecting info from your visitors. This could help you find out more about what your visitors want to see (so you can give it to them).

Hope this will help you profit,

    Fred

Don't give up, your sale might be closer that you think.

Focus your action, but use a variety of methods and then you should be able to see what works by analysing the stats of your money making or promotion methods.

    Best of luck,

  • What if you rank first for that keyword. Since its misspelled, it can't be that hard. So you have the "did you mean recipes".... on top, and your site right under it. You have a nice chance of getting that click. I can recall a few times I misspelled a word because was typing fast while searching in google and found something under the misspelled name that was interesting, or helpful.

I would also add some articles that would be of interest to people and even forget about keywords. For instance, how to eat at a restauarant when you are a vegan, do your friends ask you why you don't eat eggs, dairy and meat etc. Create a relationship with your readers on related issues aside from recipes.

Driving quality traffic is the major challenge most people face when venturing into an online business. I always say marketing starts right from a domain name, the website design and informations, the product and then finally the marketing method you use.

You can download the Dotcomology eBook by Stone Evans. Read and absorb. Within two months of consistent marketing, you will notice changes.
