I incorporated it pretty much from the get-go, but I would never move away from free. Use both!

When I started my ecommerce business on amazon I used paid traffic right from the beginning.

I still use paid traffic very heavily. It contributes substantially to my 6 figure a month income.

    Good luck with your ventures.

    From day one, literally.

I got online for the sole purpose of getting more traffic to my existing "snail mail" operation. Just make sure you send all paid traffic to a squeeze page with a good funnel behind it and follow-up in place.

Personally I have always used a combination of both paid and free traffic.
Paid for the instant results and free for the longer term and I always send the paid traffic to a sales funnel (and opt-in page) to build my list.

    £300,000.00+ ago!

My 'physical business' used to enjoy #1 organic results for everything I needed, back in the day.

But quiet a few years ago I realised I need to incorporate both paid and organic, and I have been spending around £3,000 a month since, with a total lifetime spend of over a third of a million...sterling

Needless to say, the ROI has been sufficient.

I used paid traffic after free traffic because paid traffic is fast and easy whereas free traffic takes time.

I Used paid traffic from the beginning because it's faster and easier if you learn how to use it

I'm a year in and started using it a couple of months ago, mainly because I was scared about jumping in! I read as much as I could, watched training videos until I felt ready, I don't have money to waste.

This forum has been a good resource, once you filter out the chaff. I've also used Sarah Staar's traffic training, she has an excellent, no nonsense way of getting the info across.

I started using "paid traffic" after about 3 or 4 months of "paying" for traffic by spending 3 to 4 hours daily posting free classified ads online and promoting on MySpace (back in the stone age of 2008) to all of my "friends" there.

When you got the nerve ;-)

Paid traffic does save a lotta time because you can get it faster.

So I guess it depends how quickly you want results. In the beginning that's what you're really paying for. The data you get back from your results.
