How groups help in marketing?

I have read on an article that, yahoo/google/facebook/hi5 or etc groups are the best marketing places to promote our business. How it is possible? When I tried it, I have got banned. Is there any tricky to be applied? Advice pls

It can be effective but you have to be careful not to SPAM these sites as they will be over u like a rash.

How have you gone about it so far if u don't mind me asking?
