We had a Shopify store for a while and made 0 sales. I don't blame Shopify however, I was too lazy to properly promote the site. I think it is a good platform though.

BigCommerce, which is essentially the same thing - an ecommerce shopping platform. You should start with finding a product that you can create, or buy at a lower cost than you can sell it. Then you should create a marketing plan to get your product in front of people searching for your product.
