I suggest you contact your hosting company. They can tell you where the traffic is coming from and you can then block it.

Here, ther're two different things: overloading from traffic OR overloading from an internal process. In both cases, they (your hosting company) can tell you the responsible(s) of this overload. It can be simple access to your webpages, extreme use of a form of yours, direct hitting towards a CGI script, an executable you uploaded which became crazy (or poorly written), they should be able to tell you the source(s) and destination. And if it's about traffic, you can see it in your log (on disk) or generated statistics (through your web board).

I've contacted them but every time it's a different account and a different issue, interestingly today the issue was coming from a wordpress site I set up but don't even use yet!

Is this a domain you just purchased? Perhaps it has previously established linking from previous domain owner... or the site was picked up by a spammy posting service at some point, link and track back pinging... these are the things I would look for.

Also, depending on how the server is setup... type of environment will make a huge difference in performance under even low load... a straight up apache server... can be really slow... a Nginx, Litespeed, etc. setup with memcache, OPCache etc... so that server resource usage is limited and streamlined depending on the type of traffic.

Also, some hosts set unreasonable limits for usage so they can basically force you to upgrade to a VPS or Dedicated server... when you really don't need to, if you server was configured properly in the first place, it would be able to handle more traffic and processes.

I can run millions of daily visitors on a 16GB 8 cpu core VPS... with minimal to no degradation in site page load speeds.

It's all about your setup.

Are you on a cheapo hosting plan? Then it is likely you are just being really restricted by your hosting package.... I've seen some hosts that you can't hardly even setup a WordPress site on it without maximizing your allowed processes and CPU usage, etc.

Would you build a house with wood foundation? No... concrete baby...

Same with your hosting...

Cheap and Good, rarely go together when talking about hosting... inexpensive, great value amazing hosting... that is different and easy to spot when you find it.

BTW, what type of hosting account do you have?

Shared - Modsecurity if available, plus check logs for logins to account from other countries, block them, etc.
VPS/dedicated - Use your configserver firewall

The websites in question have been established for years on my servers, overall I am seeing about 120,000 unique visitors per month across the entire server which isn't huge.

In regards to my plan, I have a managed VPS and these are the specs:

8GB Ram Guaranteed
16GB Ram Burstable
3000GB Bandwidth
3.2Ghz CPU

I have WHM and there are loads of things I can do but I have no idea what I am doing, it's like trying to re-learn Wordpress as there are loads of security mods e.t.c but it's just confusing.

I think the issue comes from either PHP script issues, bots, hackers and perhaps the overall setup.

It sounds like you need a better managed server, or at least a better host that can help you address the problem.

It may be something your host is doing or it could be your site being resource heavy, have you changed anything recently

On the surface with the info provided it sounds like an infection, possibilities could be Brute Force attack (eats resources) or a mailbot. You mention that its happening to a number of your websites, are they on a shared server? Do they have the same ip address?

I hope for your sake it is not bots/hacking/etc. All the remedies above sound good, but frustrating.

I experienced a similar issue on my account. My sites are all on a shared hosting account with the same IP at Godaddy (necessity, not choice). So, they are all technically subdomains of the first site installed.

I was seeing issues anytime even modest traffic (because that's the best I have right now) was hitting almost any of the sites. It turned out to be a Wordpress plugin I had installed to fight spammy traffic (you know, the "organic" traffic that shows on Analytics with some nonsensical longtail keyword). This plugin was doing something that maxed out CPU, memory, and processes on my host. Even if CPU and memory were below max, the active processes never seemed to clear and was always at max.

I found my resolution by deactivating all plugins and then reactivating one by one until I found the culprit.
