Not sure if there is a section where to post specific video questions..
So here it goes.

I have a few hundred videos that I want to upload to my site...
1) Should I upload 2 versions 360p for mobile and a bigger video for web users?
2) What size should be preferred. I think 640p or 720p Or is 1280x720p too big?
3) How should I watermark the videos?
3a) A semitransparent large watermark in the middle/centre?
3b) Small solid watermark (URL) in the lower right corner

The large watermark would be annoying while the small one (website URL) could be just edited out or 'overwritten' by another URL. I read that the traffic from watermark is very small or nonexistent. So is it worth the trouble?

I have hundreds of videos and it's time consuming to edit them all, esp. if the watermarks won't provide much protection. Or will they?
And since I want the same videos on the dozen websites I think it is not a great idea to embed a video from my other website. For example I would want to upload the same test drive video to sportscars, fastcars and myfriggincar websites. How do I watermark the video? Add all my 12 URLs or just my Brand Name to the video?

You can upload your videos on YouTube too but just know that there will be people who will take your videos and make them their own.

If this ever happens, especially on YouTube, you can contact YouTube and let them know that someone copied your videos and you want them removed. Trust me, they will work with you to protect your videos from copy cats.

I had this happen to me once or twice where someone copied my video. I was really mad so instead of emailing the person and asking them to delete the video, I contacted YouTube and they deleted the videos for me.

Yes I have noticed this. Eg. Just For Laugh Gags are also uploaded to JustSmile channel in addition to their original YT channel. Seems like a rip-off, but perhaps they own both channels.
I've been thinking about uploading to YT and letting them handle the (re)sizing. So I'll add the fairly large logo to videos and hope the copycats won't edit it out.
But how can I chase down the copied videos? Is there a service? It's easy to find copied pictures via reverse picture search. I wonder if something similar can be done to find copied videos.

      1. Just upload the videos to YouTube and use a plugin on your site that will optimize them for both desktop and mobile devices.

      2. All my videos are 1280x720p standard HD no big deal you can always resize the video and it will keep the quality of it

      3. Watermark them with a logo somewhere in it, have it pop up in the video randomly throughout. Maybe the URL could work

If protection and keeping people from editing the video is your main concern you can just do that.

If you are worried about people stealing your videos and uploading them as their
own, then you can host the videos on your site using Amazon s3 and then use
      players like JW Player.

As far as finding copied videos go, I really don't know.

I'm sorry to break this to you but if someone wants to steal your stuff and put it on BH dump sites, they will.

Think of it this way... They won't steal your stuff if they didn't think it was valuable enough to steal.

So use this branding opportunity with a watermark.

Sure, you can employ all sorts of Javascript tricks to prevent downloading but, at the end of the day, if someone is hellbent on stealing your stuff, they will.

If you don't believe me, look up the titles of many of the big WSOs of the past.

You'd be shocked at how many of them exist in pirated forms.

    Depressing? Yes

    Outrageous? Absolutely

Outside of filing DMCA complaints to hosts and boycotting the sites that publish the pirated materials, is there anything anyone can do about it? Sadly, NONE.

Assume that a certain % of sales will be lost to scumbags and move on.

Yes I know they will steal if they want. Might be possible to make 30 second chunks and stream them seamlessly to make it too difficult for thieves but it won't stop the smart ones.

That's why I was asking about the size. Perhaps I should upload 640p preview clips and if some documentary TV channel wants to buy the original full HD video, I'll let them purchase the non watermarked file.
