Do you trust money back guarantees?

Hi,

When buying digital products online, do you trust the vendor's "x-day money back guarantee" claim? Or does that mean little to you?

I always question the protection that a buyer would receive from getting such guarantees from sellers. After all, there is no way to enforce such claims, in my opinion.

Knowing that Paypal has recently expanded its Buyer Protection policy to include intangible items (i.e. digital goods), would Paypal issue a refund based on a money back guarantee?

Thanks

No way to enforce but it tarnishes their reputation.

You're really not trusting the guarantee per se . . . you're trusting the business owner that is giving you his personal word that he will refund your money.

The question is . . . do you trust the man or woman you're about to hand over your money to and will they honor their word?

In every sense of the word, as a business owner, you are the business. Your word is your bond and your guarantee is only as good as your word.

Never had a problem trusting it. The rare times where I have asked for a Refund NEVER EVER had an issue from the owner.

        Always received it without question.

If you do not intend to honor a guarantee, don't post one. In fact, you should explicitly state on your ad, sales copy, and/or in your TOS that no guarantee is offered and that no refunds will be made.

I am usually cautious about spending money online, and very rarely ask for a refund. To date I can not think of one time where I got burned. For the most part I deal with known entities which helps.

This is their way of promoting their products. They want to create a relationship where you can trust them and trust their product quality. I think they cannot break this promise as it would destroy them and their reputation. The probability of you returning their products would also be very low as they know they produce quality. I personally would only trust the well established companies or organizations with a reputation. thanks

You can simply ruin the reputation if you do not get the refund. One bad mark can cause a whole bundle of damage on a forum.

Now if you are buying something where you can't leave a review...be more wary. Basically what I'm saying is you can trust buying a WSO more than you can some random product in clickbank.

    Yes. They would.

In fact, it was the fact that Buyer Protection did NOT extend to intangibles, that previously allowed vendors to shield themselves from Paypal disputes, and all a vendor had to do was to point out their own policy statement to Paypal to get a dispute closed in that past.

That no longer works, and the buyer of intangible products is offered essentially the same level of protection now as if he/she had purchased a tangible product.

Thank you guys for your great input and insights.

The product I'm planning to purchase is owned by a guy named Adam Short (from Niche Profit Classroom) and it's priced at mid $xxx. I'm kinda knew in IM and this would be my first or second IM-related purchase, so I'm quite hesitant to spend such amount without having some sort of solid guarantee or recourse.

Being a newbie, I can't help feeling uncomfortable about the fact that the only option might be to take the seller's word for it.

IM money back guarantees are a sales gimmick.

Do you really want to buy something from someone that's not confident in their own product?

I don't think PayPal can give you the protection you need for money back guarantee. And still believe that online buying/selling is a bit risky.

It's nice if a vendor offers a money back guarantee. But when purchasing stuff online, even THAT'S a risk. That's why it pays to get to know a seller before you buy from them. Some sites you can almost tell immediately if the seller if full of crap. I know some marketers who would offer 45-day money back guarantees.... but at the end of the day, if a customer had the product for over 300-days, and then asks for a refund... the seller would STILL grant the refund. That's just being a good business owner.

It can only help you to offer a money back guarantee... IMO.

Worse comes to worse, you can chargeback.

But that's the last resort and platforms like CB really hate it so there's enough STRUCTURAL INCENTIVES for vendors to honor their money back guarantee commitments.

    Generally I do.

I've invoked the refund on shit products a couple of times and been refunded without issue.

One time I was even offered a free upgrade to the highest package if I'd just stay.

Looking at this from a different point of view, a guarantee can help push the 'fence sitters' over the line if they are thinking about buying a product/service.

If what they bought is shit and returns are high, then that's a problem for the seller to resolve.

I offer money back guarantee one my products and I always honor it, depends on the seller I guess. Anyways, PayPal always has the buyers' interest in mind first, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Yes depend those seller and the platform

for an example if you buy from click bank , most sellers offer money back

        submit ticket ask for refund

        depend the sellers.

I noticed some " will recommend another product in exchange for refund "

        but usually most will refund.

This is their method for advancing their items. They need to make a relationship where you can believe them and trust their item quality. I think they can't break this guarantee as it would devastate them and their notoriety. The likelihood of you giving back their items would likewise be low as they probably am aware they create quality. I for one would just trust the entrenched organizations or associations with a notoriety.

I trust money back guarantees if the merchant is offering Paypal as an option. From my experience, Paypal seems to favour the buyer in the majority of cases so that affects my outlook on whatever product or service I'm considering.

If no Paypal option, I tend to be a little more leery of promising guarantees.

As a general rule I default to NOT trusting them, but I calculate that into the "risk" of purchase.
I'm prepared to get burned in case of an unhonored return policy. That said however, I've purchased quite a lot of products in my time and I think I've ever only returned 3... If I'm remembering right. They were just that bad.

If the digital product is on Clickbank, the Clickbank platform will protect the client & ensure you get the refund if the product has issue. So you will get the refund.

Yes the guarantee is a way for the seller to reinforce their reputation. I have had a couple of instances when I have requested a refund and twice the support email has not worked and the vendor could not be contacted so you are just really taking a chance with the guarantee badge

I've been buying and selling things online since 1997.

I've only been burned once, on a Clickbank product. Rather than honoring the refund, the seller accused me of trying to cheat him by stealing his product. Clickbank issued the refund a day later.

On the other hand, I used to sell one product with a lifetime guarantee. Last month, I got a refund request, even though I haven't owned that particular business for over a decade. They sent me a copy of the email I sent, with my name on it, reinforcing the lifetime guarantee.

      I sent the refund.

Which goes back to Steve's point. When you choose to factor the offer of a refund into your decision, you're really deciding to trust the seller to honor their word.

In my experience with customers over the years with Clickbank, there has been a disturbing amount of refund requests denied by vendors, which required such intervention by Clickbank for final resolution. Their unconditional 60-day money back guarantee provides a trustworthy platform that is totally independent of vendor behavior. As far as I know, there is no such affiliate network (including JVZoo) that provides comparable protection for buyers and affiliates.

As a Vendor myself, I always honor my money back guarantee, no questions asked. In return, If I buy something with stated money back guarantee in the salespage, I will demand it and if needed to be posted to the forum for others to see, I will do it.

Just perform due diligence before you buy a product so you dont have to go to refund stage at all.

Use a credit card and if they don't refund, then threaten to chargeback. Sellers don't like getting chargebacks against their merchant account. Worst comes to worst, actually do the chargeback.

With those offers where I wouldn't trust the money back guarantee I probably wouldn't want to buy the product in the first place.

I've just yesterday got my first refund, and I was uncertain if I'd really get it, but they canceled my order, no questions asked.

I've heard of rumours that a famous YouTuber is doing some shady business with his dating sites never refunding people and not even letting them cancel their subscriptions. Now, I don't know if any of that is true, but that got me a bit worried. I wouldn't buy anything from him, just to be on the safe side, but how trustworthy are other big people? I guess you never know, do you?
